Chapter 23
by Vox121
What's next?
Weekend
I think Kaylee was avoiding me. Since that night, she’d barely spoken to me. In a way, that was fine. I was still trying to come to terms with my feelings. When we were together, it just felt weird. Like a line had been crossed and we were both trying to ignore it and failing miserably. Friday was when it became blatant she was avoiding me. We barely spoke at all after the basketball game and she expertly dodged me on grabbing post-victory shakes, vanishing after heading to the locker room to get her stuff.
Not a great way to start the weekend.
Since it was the weekend, it meant Paige was showing her newest boy toy a good time. It wasn’t like I cared what she did, it’s that she did it loud. With her room above the den, I heard her more than the damn TV.
A screech filled the air followed by blissful silence. Finally, it was over. I glanced at the clock. Twenty-three minutes. God damn. Was the guy a robot or what? If there was a reason why I was so damn abnormal, it was probably because of my younger sister. While I had no real desire for anyone other than Kaylee, Paige seemed willing and able to screw everything with two legs and working parts. Woman, man, didn’t matter to her. We shared a womb for nine months. She must have stolen my share of sexual energy because she had it in spades.
Beside me, Mom wore a wide smile as she looked my way. She’d caught me looking at the ceiling. “At least one of my children is normal.”
I loved my mom, and I knew the feeling was mutual, but I was sick of these subtle digs. I know it was just her way of coping with the fact me and my older sister took more after dad than she’d like. In her way, she was supportive of our choices. That didn’t mean she liked that Elisabeth and I were more interested in a single person than being with multiple partners like normal people. My older sister had been dating the same guy for nearly three years now and I’d met him several times. He seemed like a cool guy.
Mom was more open-minded than most people. She had to be considering she married Dad even after finding out he had no interest in other women. Still, that didn’t mean she followed it. There were plenty of times Dad came home by taxi, Mom showing up much later in the night. Other times, Dad would stay in the guest room, another man taking his place for the night.
I think that’s what scared me the most. Dad loved Mom and Mom loved Dad yet they had that disconnect. Dad loved Mom too much to **** his ideology on her, and Mom loved him enough to forgive his quirks that society deemed deviant. Dad wanted Mom to be like him, and she wanted him to be like her, but both loved the other too much to ask the other to change. Was that what my future held? Two people who loved each other, doomed to circle endlessly as two different lifestyles pulled them in separate directions?
Besides, she knew better than anyone that even if I wanted to, being as active as my sister was impossible.
I focused on the TV, ignoring the dig. Commercials started as I heard footsteps thundering down the stairs. I looked out the doorway to find Paige and her… friend… standing there.
“Thanks for coming,” Paige said, standing on her tiptoes to plant a kiss on the guy’s lips.
“Any time Paige. R-really. Any time.”
She winked at him. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
I made a gagging noise, drawing a glare from both her and Mom. Shooing the boy out the door, she waved before closing the door behind her. She heaved a sigh before sauntering into the room running a hand through her hair. She was wearing an oversized t-shirt with a pocket over her heart that held her phone. I suspected that was all she was wearing.
“Well?” Mom asked.
“Ugh. Had to fake an orgasm just to get him to stop. The guy can go forever, but it’s like… nothings there.” She fell back onto the couch, spreading her arms out as wide as she could. The shirt hiked dangerously up her legs. “Now I’m just frustrated.”
“Why don’t you call your boyfriend over?”
No matter how many times Paige insisted she had a boyfriend, I knew she didn’t. The boy she considered her ‘boyfriend’ was just a glorified dildo to her. I don’t know why she treated him like she did, or why the guy continued to cling to her. In a lot of ways, Paige was like Ellie with a ramped-up sex drive and didn’t give one shit about social norms related to dating. In my eyes though, my sister was worse. Ellie at least cared about her boyfriend and made an effort to show it. From how Paige talked about and acted towards her boyfriend, she made it seem like doing things with him was an obligation rather than something she wanted. Worse, I’d overheard her bragging to her friends that she didn’t let him touch any other girls. If that was the case, the poor bastard was practically celibate considering how Paige never slept with him unless there was absolutely nothing else.
“Eh. Don’t feel like it.”
“Well, I’m reminding both of you that your father and I are going out tonight.”
I remembered her mentioning something about a play. They had offered to get us tickets, but the show didn’t interest me. It was supposed to be a comedy about a woman and her husband trying to figure out which guy knocked her up. It was the current hotness on Broadway, but I preferred musicals.
Paige’s eyes lit up. “Really? Can I have a few guys over then?”
Mom spared a glance over to me. “I don’t mind, but your brother might.”
“I’m going out tonight too.”
That surprised both of them as much as it surprised me. Until that moment, I hadn’t planned on going out. The moment Mom rolled on Paige inviting guys over, my plans for the night had been **** on me. Anywhere was going to be better than here.
“Where are you going?” Mom asked.
That was a good question…
Where does Scott go?
