"We're professional adults, David." She stood up, straightening her clothes. "We can control ourselves."
"Yeah... absolutely..." He stood up as well, smoothing his shirt. "Back to the grind?"
Did you have to say 'grind'?
They returned to the conference room, and continued to work. At least... they tried to. Beth was having a hard time concentrating. Every time they go close to each other, to set down a file or discuss some point of law, there was... incidental contact. A brush of fingers here, a hand on a shoulder there. It was clear that neither one of them was able to focus.
Despite this roadblock, the managed to get everything ready and sorted by 9:00 PM. Beth patted the file folder with satisfaction. "You see! Professionials!"
"Thanks again for helping out." He looked at his phone. "Jesus...its really late. No call from Kim, either. Guess it's pizza and sleeping alone for me tonight."
"Brian's probably getting home from his booze and schmooze event..." Beth murmured. "I never called him."
"I'll see you on Monday, then?" David was putting together his briefcase.
"Yeah." She watched him, chewing at her underlip. "I..." her words caught.
"What?" David turned.
"You're a really sweet guy, David. I'm sorry for what she's putting you through." She stepped up to him, looking into his eyes. "You don't deserve it."
"Neither do you... I mean... you don't deserve what you're going through either."
"Thanks." His hands were on her hips. She didn't know when that had happened.
