Chapter 14 by Manbear Manbear

Do you try the lock or move on to find Orestes?

Try (option A)

You decide to at least give the lock a try. In your experience you've found it to be human nature for people to hide their most valuable possessions either as high or as deep as possible. Your lock-picks are woven into the braid of your hair and it takes a while for you to loosen the thick coils and comb the small picks out with your fingers.

The man who taught you what little you knew about picking locks mocked you for your decision to hide your picks in such an awkward place. "You should be able to slide these tools into your hands as smoothly and quickly as those damn knives of yours." he scolded you on more than one occasion but you valued having the picks well hidden over ease of access. Maybe if you were more proficient with this skill you'd spend the money for a second set of picks that you could keep in a more convenient location, but for now you have **** but to spend the time.

Leaving the thick braid halfway undone you turn your attention to the lock-plate. Working in the dark isn't as much of a handicap as an untrained observer might guess, often time you close your eyes anyway as you concentrate to feel the intricate mechanism of a lock. The well-oiled tumblers are easy to manipulate but each time you get more than two or three of the tiny locking pieces to open one or more of them falls as you work on the remaining tumblers.

Patience. You remind yourself as time slips away. You are doing the best you can in time, you are sure you could open this lock. However, time was one thing that you no longer had in unlimited quantities. You pause for a minute to stretch your aching fingers and clear your mind and try again to work the lock. One by one the tumblers are lifted until only the one deepest in the lock is still holding, delicately you reach deeper into the tiny hole feeling for the last tiny piece of metal.

"Damn" You hiss far too loudly as you hear two or three of the other tumblers falling with tiny clicks. So close! You could try again of course, but your inner clock is urging you onward. As much as you'd like to open this door, your primary target is Orestes himself. After you gutted the snake he'd probably have the key to this door somewhere on him.

Do you try again?
