Chapter 10 by whizzper whizzper

How do things shape up from here?

They get away

Greg was still a bit groggy as they got down to the underground parking garage. "What the hell is going on? Who...who are you guys? My...my family is not rich..."

Dove smiled kindly, "We're saving you from doing something stupid."

The sounds of the firefight at the other end of the complex seemed to finally penetrate Greg's mind as his eyes widened, "What in the fragging hell is going on?"

"That's what I'd like to know actually..." Fire Fox stated as they walked towards the security parking area.

"Which is your car?"

"The mauve Mercury Comet."

Dove looked over the cars as they got to them, picking out the purplish car right off the bat. In her days as a thief the Mercury Comet was as common as a Toyota Corolla in the late 1990's and even into earlier this century. Easy to steal, easy to sell, but not really worth the effort.

Tyr, keys in hand, opened the car and popped the rest of the locks for the rest of the team.

Thirty seconds later, with Tyr in the drivers seat, Jake in the passenger's seat and Fire Fox, Greg and Dove in the backseat, they pulled out of the spot and lined up with the exit of the garage. Tyr swore as he saw some of the Ork's coming down the ramp they were going to use to get the hell out of Dodge. "Jake?"

"On it. They have a Shaman...Dog Shaman I think. Maybe Wolf." Jake states as he waved his hands at the intruders. Three went down right away as the fourth staggered a bit. A second wave had him fall as well. A third wave had them levitated and out of the way. As soon as the Ork's were clear of the ramp Tyr gunned the engine. Comet's weren't known for acceleration, but if car's had intelligence than this one knew it was time to go.

The Comet hit the ramp at forty miles per hour, and when it got to the top of the ramp the occupants felt themselves get lighter as the car left the ground for a split second.

"Ow!" Fire Fox yelped as his head hit the roof of the car.

As soon as the car had traction again Tyr cut hard to the left, then a quick right to get onto the main thoroughfare away from the Paratech facilities. The Comet also wasn't known for powersliding around a turn, but Tyr somehow made it do that as he sped away from the building.

A loud crack was heard from the rear window, followed by another from the windshield as the bullet entered and exited the car. Luckily it missed everyone...

"Oh frag...oh...I...I think...oh god." Tyr heard Greg say from the backseat, disproving Tyr's hope that the bullet missed everyone...

"Fire, Greg's been shot! Uh...looks like a graze across his shoulder. Is there a towel or something over on your side?" Dove said, calmly.

"Uhm...I have a handkerchief...would that work?"

"Maybe..."

"Jake, you have enough to stop his bleeding?" Tyr asked, keeping his eyes on the road. He took a turn at high speed, again powersliding around a corner, the G-forces pinning the others to their spots for a second.

"Easily." Jake answered.

"Tyr, this isn't the way home."

"Actually it is, just a couple blocks over. Doc Meridian is on this avenue...from there it's a fifteen minute walk to the warehouse."

"Who's going to pay for him?" Fire Fox asked as he handed Dove the handkerchief.

"Doc owes me, he'll accept him." Jake said as he twisted and reached back to touch the wound on Greg's shoulder. A light played over his fingers and onto the flesh wound on Greg.

"Ahhh." Greg said as the heal spell stopped the bleeding, then he put the kid to sleep again to take away the pain.

"I'll take the handkerchief." Jake said.

"So what the hell is going on?" Fire Fox asked as Dove handed the handkerchief to Jake. "I mean one second everything is normal, then I come back from the Matrix and all Hell's broken loose!"

"Dunkelzahn was assassinated..." Jake answered, monotonically.

"You are dreking me, right?" Fire Fox said, after a moment.

"No." Tyr said.

Jake turned on the radio.

"I'm just getting word that a Military Mage by the name of Tanya Reilly has been sucked into the...the Astral Rift they're calling it." the broadcaster said.

Dove gasped, "Tanya...Reilly? Tyr..."

Tyr narrowed his eyes, "Not now. It may be a different one." But Tyr had little doubt that it was the right Tanya Reilly. Which means he'll be getting a call from his brother soon if it was. And how many Tanya Reilly's would there be in the UCAS Military as a Mage? Not many, is the answer Tyr came up with.

What's next?
