A drowner resembles a corpse dredged from the bottom of a pond. It is sickly blue or green in color, with slime and sludge oozing out of every pore and the acrid stench of rot wafting off of it. That is why it is often thought drowners – along with their more dangerous cousins: vodniks, mucknixers and drowned dead – arise from the bodies of those who drown in shallow water: lost travelers falling into bogs, children who swim too far from the shore or, in the case of vodniks, **** peasants who stumble off narrow swamp trails.

You've spent enough time around Witchers to know how to handle a few drowners. They are territorial creatures with basic human intelligence. Their morphed flesh is especially susceptible to fire, your specialty. You opt to enter the sewer now and dispatch the creatures quickly, before the mercenaries arrive and take a cut of your much needed reward. If you do this right you will be set for a week!

You push open the rusted iron gate and crinkle your nose at the pungent aroma within. The air feels heavy with the stench of sewage and the stone walls are caked in algae. Your shoes immediately get soaked as you step through the dimly lit tunnels. Soon you are up to your knees in viscous sludge. You're going to need to spend some of your reward on new boots.

You flick your finger to produce a small flame that lights your way as you get deeper into the complex system. You start to see more signs of monsters: decaying corpses, claw marks, and a new smell of rot mixed with seaweed. You keep a hand on your dagger as you delve further into the sewer, ready for anything that might be lurking around the next corner. You start to feel anxious which is worse than it sounds. If you aren't mentally calm then you won't be able to cast spells as acutely.

You stop I your tracks as you hear gurgling and growls in the distance, echoing off the damp walls. You recognize the sound as drowners. Snuffing out your magical flame you continue towards the sound draped in shadow. Drowners can see very well in the dark but you will still have an advantage if they don't see your bright light from many yards away.

Eventually you reach the source of the noises just around the next corner. You slowly step up to it and peak around, catching a glimpse of three hunched blueish grey human shaped blobs. Drowners, true to their namesake look like washed up corpses come to life, slick with slime and malformed bones pushing against the waterlogged skin wrapped around them. You don't hesitate a moment, eager to keep the element of surprise you spin around the corner and cover the entire room with a wave of magical fire. You ears quiver with the loud shrieks of pain escaping the monsters dying bodies. The flame easily melts away their flesh and reduces them to smoldering piles of bone and sinew.

Your moment of triumph is suddenly cut short as a rough appendage grabs you by the ankle from under the sewage water and effortlessly whips your body down into it. A guttural splash interrupts the sound of your fading flames as you hit the thick liquid and sink below it. You can't tell the difference between the pressure of the water and the many clawed hands grasping at your limbs. You can't move, you can't see, and you can't breath. You struggle trying to free yourself or send a burst of flame outwards but the crashing darkness around you prevents it, and soon you fall ****.

Where do you awake?
