Chapter 22 by TMJ2008 TMJ2008

What task does Instructor Shyael have for you today?

The usual: cleaning and mending equipment while she lectures.

When you enter the classroom, Lime right behind you as seems to be her preferred place now, it is to find that Instructor Shyael has set a few of the practice sets of armor and equipment on one of the long tables in the classroom. She has just finished placing a set of studded leather armor on the table when she turns to look your way as you enter the classroom. Her eyes, that beautiful shade of violet, fix on you with that haughty sort of aloofness that most elves seem skilled at bringing into their gazes with little effort.

"Mr. Karlsson. I'm glad you have deigned to show up on time for this, at least.", she says as you close the door behind Lime, giving a sheepish look towards the elven instructor.

"Yes, Instructor Shyael. I, um, didn't want to be late again, after all.", you say lamely and she sighs as she gestures to the armor and other equipment arrayed before you.

"Here. Each of these items have been damaged in some way during class. Get to work mending them. All the tools you should need are there.", she says and then moves towards the lectern where she usually teaches from where a book and quill sit, obviously meant for her to take notes or do some other work.

"Yes, Instructor.", you say and head over to the table, taking up a set of leather gloves that seem to have been torn in half somehow. You could only imagine what sort of enchantment had been attempted for that to happen, but fixing it was only a matter of a good needle and some hide to patch with. You could do that easily enough and, taking up the tools to do so, you begin to work.

Lime, meanwhile, watches you curiously for a time as you work, sitting at the table you work at and resting her chin upon her hands as you begin the work of mending the gloves. She seems to like the sight of your hands moving so deftly and the look on your face as you work, a cheerful grin on her own face as she watches you so intently. It almost makes you blush again, the intensity with which she watches you, but you bury your embarrassment in your work. Work that you finish quickly enough, your skills with crafting showing through again as you have patched the gloves to nearly new and move on to the set of leather armor you'd seen.

As you work, you eventually hear Inspector Shyael come up behind you to inspect your results. She gives a soft hmph and sighs again. "I just can't understand why you insist on walking the path of a sorcerer when your skill obviously lies in the mundane. You are very skilled with this...menial labor. There is nothing wrong with this sort of craftsmanship. There is a place in the world for such people.", she says as she looks over your work, "You could be quite successful if you focused your efforts on the simple crafting of equipment such as this."

You feel her words hit home, but you do your best to keep your chin up and focus on the armor you are currently trying to affix metal studs back onto. "I...I believe I can be successful if I focus my efforts on being a mage-smith as well. My father and my elder brothers are very successful in that regard. If I work at it, I am sure to be able to reach such heights.", you say, trying to keep the defensiveness and hurt her words caused in you from your voice.

"I am afraid, Mr. Karlsson, that that is unlikely. You have shown little improvement in all your years here. It is a wonder you've gotten as far as you have, really. Many of the instructors here have taken a liking to you and shown you pity, it is true, but that does not mean such things will last. Eventually, you will have to face the reality of your situation.", she states firmly and coolly, "You are simply not cut out to be a true sorcerer and continuing down this path is a waste of your time and energy and, more importantly, the time and energy of your instructors."

You feel a stab of pain in your heart at her words and, even as optimistic as you are, you can't keep a frown from your lips or pain from your eyes. Luckily, you're turned away from Instructor Shyael so she doesn't see it. Of course, you forget that there is somebody else in the classroom who can see and even feel what you are feeling quite clearly. You don't think about that, though, as you just take a deep breath and continue to work.

"I thank you for your opinion, Instructor Shyael, b-but I believe that anything can be accomplished if one tries hard enough.", you say, still trying to keep your spirits up as best you can.

"Mr. Karlsson, optimistic and naive notions will not change fact. I am not trying to be cruel. I am simply trying to keep you from wasting time and effort that could be used elsewhere. Honestly, do you think you will get anywhere if you keep going the way you have? If you think so, then, truly, you are a foo-HMPH!?", Instructor Shyael lectures on until, suddenly, her words are cut off and all you can hear is muffled sounds of distress.

Surprised and worried, you whirl around and see...

What do you see when you turn around?
