The one to your left

After a moment’s hesitation, you pick the street to your left. This isn’t your first visit to Athenapolis, and you’re pretty certain that this route will take you to some of the more interesting parts of the city.

Since you were in the first line of attack, you’re moving well ahead of your comrades, many of which have stopped for a moments rest before setting about looting the city, though the more experienced ones are like you in that they realise that quick action is essential if you want to find good plunder.

Thankfully, you’ve yet to see any armed civilians out on the streets, no doubt those men in this neighbourhood who had the balls to fight did so at the breach, but then this doesn’t seem to be the richest of neighbourhoods either, and you’re pretty sure that the richer people live closer to the city’s centre.

Moving at a trot, you notice that you’re under the scrutiny of terrified civilians every once in a while, men and women who gawk at you from windows and alleyways before returning to hide from the oncoming wave of looting and destruction.

Due to your experience and status, you’ve been allotted four slaves from the city’s population, either to keep for yourself or to sell in the grand **** auction that will take place once the city has been occupied and pacified, and you’re eager to secure your part of the city’s riches.

By now, you stop and look back to see that you’ve outdistanced your kinsmen, leaving you on your own, although you are confident that you can deal with whatever threat that might show up without any assistance.

The street has steadily grown wider and the houses running along it have become better built, although they’re still not so luxurious that they could be described as palaces. There is hardly anyone moving on the streets, and you’ve passed a few abandoned barricades on the way to where you are now.

Just as you’re about to start moving again, you hear a scream coming from a nearby backstreet. Your guess is that it is a woman who’s screaming.
