The Role of Names

All main characters get two versions of their name - formal & diminutive. In some cases the name choice will be arbitrary and context dependent - for example Richard will refer to his coworker Marty in a bar, but Martin in the office. In others it will have serious story consequences - for example when Nadine refers to Izi by that pet name in public it's to clearly display her superiority and humiliate the wife.

Richard thinks his diminutive - Dick - is silly, so will use Richard where possible, and others will refer to him as such unless they want to make fun of him / dismiss him.
Izabella hates this particular diminutive - Izi - and will normally never use that form or allow anyone (including her husband) to use it. Calling her that is easiest way to make her angry.
Nadia is always referred to by her diminutive by default due to her low class and subservient position. She got used to it and rarely uses her chosen form: Nadine
Marty prefers softer version of his name but still uses Martin in professional context.

Story is set in an environment where classism is still a thing so higher class characters will get more up-class names (eg. Regina), while working class will be Mary.
