The Plot thickens

It was twenty minutes when my Dad said: “Let get something to eat shall we.” No one responded. I would have missed it if my book didn’t suck.

“Sure dad,” I said without looking up.

“Ah, she lives.” My Dad said trying to light a wet tinder pile of a conversation.

“What did you do?” I asked. “It has to be pretty bad. Mom is pissed.” still talking into the book.

“What? , she isn’t mad..” Dad trying to convince me otherwise.

“She really is.” I interrupted finally looking up. “She has been looking out the window for the entire ride. She literally hasn’t spoken to you in days. So you, try to out-think your daughter, and..” I pause for a moment making a fake sniffling sound “ and Lie to your daughter. Breaking the bonds of trust we have worked to build..’ I said in a fake high-pitched voice.

“Listen…” My father says as he looks at my mom. “It’s a complex issue okay. I didn’t have time to think it through.”

“But being swingers and poly is a simple one somehow? Especially trying to explain to a 12-year-old kid? Instead of getting birds and bees talk I was introduced to a vastly complex system of does and don’t. While other kids are still figuring out where the stork fits into all this.” I said almost in one breath. “And I want burgers if that is the next question.”

“Well, if you have to hear it from anybody, I guess I could…” he started to say all dejected with his Eeyore voice.

“Your father sold you into prostitution .. but without the money” my mom cut in. She was pissed. I could always tell. She had a life and vitality to every word she said or scream that filled you with joy. She spoke with a hollow cold tone today. She was NOT happy.

“Alright,” I said “Now things are getting interesting. YOU have to promise not to make up shit… but tell me what is REALLY going on. I deserve to know if it includes me.”

It really came down to what story I wanted to hear. Both would be true, both I would say with different viewpoints. Who did I want to hear first?
