The lightning crackled above, running across the sky like the scars of a forgotten god, but the crew of the Long Hope weren't worried. Their ship had two bronze orbs, one above each mast, where a seaship would have a crow's nest. These were the Catchers. They caught the lightning, and tamed it, and funneled it down into the crystal cases below deck.

Two crewmen waited down there, to change out the cases. Dangerous work, as you could never know when the lightning would come down, and therefore it was usually assigned as a punishment.
