The Bishop's 'heretic' is revealed

The Bishop smiled gently, his eyes still gazing into Emmaline's. "I had heard that you were very forthright and businesslike. A woman who likes to get straight to the point. It's an admirable trail my lady, and I commend you."

"As to the matter I wished to discuss, we have dealt with it just now. The delicate issue of the heir and her unsavory connections. You have provided me with valuable advice, and I won't delay in taking action. In fact, I'll act this very night. The subject of our discussion is present at this event, which will make matters easier, if possibly a bit embarrassing. We try to be discreet, but alas it is not always possible. I like to think that it sets good example for others who might be considering heresy." He takes another sip of wine, and suddenly turns his gaze away from Emmaline to a distant part of the room. "Ah, there she is. The subject of our discussion. Thank you for your sage advice my lady."

Emmaline turned her head to follow his gaze and felt a cold hand close around her heart. For there could be no doubt on whom the Bishop had fixed his eyes.

Her younger sister, Caroline.

It seemed she was in fact here, flitting around like a worried hummingbird, no doubt searching for Emmaline herself. The notion that he had been talking about Caroline was so absurd, it took a moment for it to sink in. Caroline, aligned with some sort of heretical cause? If not for his particular demeanor, Emmaline would have sworn the Bishop was joking. Unfortunately, Emmaline was almost certain that the man was deadly serious, and that she would need to choose her next words very carefully.
