Chapter 10 by Manbear Manbear

Does the doctor think she's crazy?

That's what the datafiles indicate

"That's what this datafiles indicates." The handsome doctor says as he points to a crystal clear display that has appeared before them on the wall. "Both your DNA analysis and BWP are as close to Earth Human Standard as I've ever seen." Samantha stares at him in confusion and hope. Would he believe what she had to say? May she should tell him about last night's attack. But before she can speak the handsome doctor continues.

"So tell me, where are you from, really?" Just like that her hopes sink.

"I don't think I can, at least not yet." Samantha hopes that she can intrigue him enough so he doesn't abandon her. "I don't remember how I got here or even much about who I am." Samantha hears the nurse stifle some sort of grunt or gasp but without seeing her face, she cannot be sure if the nurse is amused, surprised or insulted by her response. The doctor stares at her for a few seconds before turning to the nurse.

"Can you give me a few minutes with her in private?" His words are politely but Samantha has no doubt that an order had been given. The nurse's knees bend slightly in a gesture that looks quite a bit like a curtsey and without another word she steps out of the room and closes the door.

"Do you know why you're in recuperating in the private ward?” He asks Samantha. “Instead of with all the rimmers in the South Wing?” Samantha shakes her head in confusion. When IS-2 found you and couldn’t verify your identity they should have dumped you with the other charity cases, but the duty sergeant is an old Navy friend and he knew I liked mysteries so he sent you here instead.” Samantha doesn’t think the doctor looks much like any of the Navy men she’d ever met; he was far more refined. Maybe it was because of his medical training but the urbane doctor looks and acts more like royalty than a sailor.

“Kyle was right. I am intrigued; especially after I made a few more inquiries.” The doctor pulls a gold coin from his pocket and flips it casually into the air. “Where did you get these?” He asks handing her a Sacagawea Dollar. “As far as Rose Antiques can tell this is an authentic Earth coin from the 20th century.” Samantha’s knees buckle when his words confirm her suspicions. “The other collectables in your bag appear to be authentic period pieces as well Rhiain.” Samantha loves the way the name ‘Rhiain’ rolls from his lips; would ‘Samantha’ sound as mysterious and desirable? Pushing the idle fancy back fiercely she concentrates on what he is saying.

“If they are, you are either a very rich young woman with more money than sense, a rogue who has pulled off the theft of the cycle” Samantha feels part of her react to his description of the theft with a mixture of pride and concern “or a smuggler-courier who has gone missing and has left an annoyed patron wondering where you are.” He pauses watching her carefully for any tells in her body language, but Rhiain at least is as practiced in deception as the doctor is in interrogation.

“Whichever of those scenarios it is or something even more fantastic even than those…” If he only knew how fantastic “… I think you could use a friend. However,” he emphasizes the word “I can only help you if you let me.” Could he be a friend? Samantha finds herself hoping, but some other part of her (her Rhiain persona maybe?) thinks it's just too good to be true.

What does she tell him?
