Chapter 4
by whizzper
Do I?
Sure, but can't stay too late...
I grin at Mel, "Sure."
"You can park in our apartment's spot in the lot. I don't have a car and neither does my room mate, and it's better than getting a ticket on the street, you know?"
"So thoughtful." I say as I start the car moving again. I have to go around the block as the entrance to the lot is behind me now.
Melanie fishes her keys out of her bag to open the door to her apartment. "So, my room mate works the night shift at St. Vincent's Hospital, makes for lonely nights pretty much."
"Do you ever see her?"
"Oh, sure." She says as she pushes the door open and takes a step inside. She puts her bag on a table by the door, dropping her keys into it. "Take a seat on the couch, baby." she says with a giggle. She moves off to the kitchen as I move into the living room of the two bedroom apartment. I take a glance at the pictures on the entertainment center before I take a seat on the mauve couch.
The first one I looked at was of an older couple. For some reason they remind me of Archie and Edith Bunker. Though this Archie hadn't let himself go, and the Edith didn't look like as much of a ditz. That must be her parents. Next to that picture looked like the Kid's Portrait as I see nine people in this one, with Melanie off on the right end. Guess it's supposed to read left to right in age order. The last picture is of me and her after that volleyball game. This strikes me as a bit odd as we had taken hundreds of pictures of that day and I know the photographer had given everyone a full set.
I have no time to ponder this as I hear her starting in from the kitchen. I sit on the couch as she enters the living room with a bottle of wine and two glasses. "Cindy tightened this too much. Could you get it for me? I'm going to get out of these shoes. Maybe change entirely." she says as she hands me the bottle and places the glasses on the coffee table. She then moves towards one of the bedrooms, swinging the door closed lightly as I pick up the bottle. I notice that the door doesn't catch, and it's not really closed.
I debate with myself if I should go and try and take a peek at her.
Should I try and peek in on her?
