Chapter 15

Who do you support?
Support Charmaine
“Charmaine’s right. Lisa and Lucille are just expressing two sides of the same coin. What I find really interesting is how people believe they are fighting one side by supporting the other. Take Lisa’s example of Chyoa, because it’s a perfect metaphor for the trap that she’s fallen into. Lisa thinks Chyoa empowers individual choice, because she can make meaningful decisions for her character, but in reality, all of her choices have been preordained and constrained by a community of writers - society, if you will. She might think she’s engaging in some sort of resistance or subversion by clicking on links about chicks with dicks or **** or something like that… But she’s only driving views to an instrument of society itself. It’s not an authentic choice. Real choice, and I think Charmaine gets this,” you say, “real choice means real sex.”
This is, of course, all horseshit to get into Charmaine’s pants, but she seems impressed, and nods along with you. The professor, too, looks like he buys what you’re saying. He strokes his beard a few times, and says: “Very interesting point, Alex. I have never visited Chyoa myself, of course, but an old geezer like me can’t always keep up with the times. Now, to push back a little on all of you - everybody seems to have been working off the assumption that society is inherently some sort of negative ****. Why is that? Do you think it’s true?”
With that, the discussion kicks off again, to much fiery debate. Having gotten a good read on Charmaine’s thoughts, you manage to make several points connecting sex and society that she follows up on and supports. Before you know it, class is over. As you get up to leave the classroom, you see the girls looking at you with a respect that wasn’t there before. Now, if only there were some way to convert off these relationships that you’ve been building…
Charmaine +5
Lucille +2
Lisa +2
