Still in the Hospital

After a while you can’t distinguish between dream and reality anymore, as you seem to drift in and out of consciousness for what seems like an eternity. Yet you notice the presences around you fading further and further away until you seem to lie in complete darkness. You feel cold, you are alone and in pain, yet no one seems to be near you and that is what gets you the most. Then after another long period of time you notice a faint light, at first you hope that this will finally be the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel so you can escape this hell. As the light nears however you begin to feel warmth again, someone is touching your hand, holding on to you tightly. Bit by bit the pain fades and leaves you numb and finally you are able to open your eyes again.

As you look to your left, you notice that Melody is the one who is holding your hand, she seems to be in both a better and a worse state then when you last saw her. Even though she seems to have showered and changed her clothes, her face looks even worse. Her eyes are reddened and she looks like she has missed a lot of sleep the last few days, what shocks you more is the hatred and self loathing you read in her eyes. It is as if someone had drawn a veil of darkness over the once so vibrant and happy young woman. You decide to show her that you are awake, if only to get your and her mind working into a better direction.

“Hey Melody, how long was I out?”

You try to give her a smile, but you are not even sure how much of your whisper she has understood. She seems to have noticed though, as she turns her head to face you directly. Her expression turns from anger and regret to fear and uncertainty as she looks deeply into your eyes. She clutches your hand tightly as she forces a weak smile.

“OH Jack, I am so glad that you are back. I was so afraid, you have been in the hospital almost a week.”

“Well at least I…”

Melody interrupts you quickly by placing one of her fingers on your lips.

“Shhh. Please let me explain Jack, I am so sorry for what I have put you through and I can imagine that you probably don’t want to see me anymore, but I just need to tell you a few things before I can let you rest.”

She takes a deep breath and looks at you nervously.

“Ok here goes, first of I need to apologize, I overreacted horribly. No, actually I my reaction was the opposite of what I should have done. You probably won’t believe this, but I’ve had a crush on you since I first met you. This, this crush has turned into something more over the time that we were together. I have actually fallen deeply in love with you over the last years. But when you finally made the move I had been waiting for, for so long it was at the worst possible moment, the one moment when I was so full of rage and mental anguish that I lashed at you instead of kissing you like I always wanted.”

“Melody, I feel…”

“Please Jack, please let me finish! I know that you don’t feel the same way I do and even if you did, at one point you most certainly don’t anymore. So I went ahead and I requested that I would be move out of your dorm.”

You try to sit up fast, but not even a second later you realize that this was a very bad idea as the pain surges through your body. You inhale sharply, but manage to refrain from screaming in pain.

You manage to hiss a “You did what?” through your clenched teeth.

“I am sorry Jack and I know that this was incredibly cowardly of me, but I have found someone who can easily take my place, she is not a complete lunatic like me.”

“Damn it Melody! Will you stop this please? I don’t want to lose you as a friend because of one small mistake. And do you really think that I hate you because of this? I love you and this won’t be changed by what happened, so please don’t leave me!”

Melody just stares at you in shock, she is holding your hand so hard that it hurts, but this pain somehow seems soothing, as long as you feel it you know that she is still by your side.

“You love me? After all I have put you through? How could you love someone like me? I am just damaged goods…”

“Damaged goods? Far from it, you are a beautiful and alluring woman and no matter what, I love you!”

For a moment it seems like Melody cannot break out of her self loathing, but as she looks into your eyes you notice something change in her gaze. Slowly, as if afraid that any fast movement could destroy this moment she inches towards your face. Her breathing has become short and hollow. Soon she is only inches away and her eyes close, so do yours as your lips finally meet.

At first it is just a chaste kiss until you wrap your arms around Melody, pulling her close. This seems to be all the encouragement she needs, as she slips her tongue past your lips into your mouth. You continue to make out for what feels like hours, your pain swept away be the adrenalin and joy you feel at your current situation. In the end Melody pulls away, looking deep into your eyes. You are mesmerized by her glowing emerald eyes. They are still almost hypnotic, despite being bloodshot. Her face is flushed and her lips are red from your kiss. She looks at you, as if to gauge whether you truly loved her.

“I love you Melody…”

Is all you care to whisper to the girl of your dreams.

“And I love you Jack. Even though I still can’t believe that you continue to be in love with someone who almost killed you!”

You smile and raise your left hand to stroke her face.

“If it was anyone else, I probably would still be mad, but you are special, no matter what you do, I love you.”

Melody wraps her arms around your neck, hugging you tightly.

“We need to get you out of here soon, so I can apologize to you properly.”

You smile at Melody as she draws back a little bit to look you in the eyes once more.

“And you need to make sure that we stay in the same dorm, I don’t want anyone else as roommate ok?”

Melody gives you a dreamy look and nods. You notice that by now her face seems to have lit up a bit, the dark shadow you noticed earlier is almost gone completely.
