Staying asleep is an adjustment

Dan quickly fell asleep after rolling over on his back. The overhead light didn't bother him too much. Exhaustion from the day and recent events helped propel him into a dreamless sleep.

Movement beside him, and a subsequent tidal wave of motion from the air mattress, roused him from sleep an unknown amount of time later.

"Sorry," Laura whispered as she crawled off the bed and stood up. "Bathroom. Try to go back to sleep," she encouraged as her bare feet slapped on the concrete floors.

Twenty minutes later, she returned and did her best not to rock the mattress too badly. She failed. Dan opened his eyes and tried not to sigh. It took him a moment to realize his mother had changed. She no longer wore the undershirt.

After they got settled in again, Dan found sleep again after a long while of staring at the small time-display on the microwave. What felt like ten minutes later, a warm heat seemed to radiate from in front of him, waking him from a hazy dream.

Laura's back was to him. At some point, he'd rolled over and pressed himself up against her, just like she'd done the previous night. To his horror, he realized his pelvis was pushed up against Laura's backside. Compact muscle shifted around his stomach and pelvis as his mother moved in her sleep.

Dan sighed and rolled back over. He wasn't sure what his mother might say if she were the one that awoke with her son snuggling up to her. It took a while, but he finally got back to sleep.

The next morning, his mother was the one who woke him. "Honey, you're going to be late soon," she whispered in his ear. She rubbed his arm and shoulder to wake him gently.

Rousing from sleep, Dan sat up on the mattress and looked around with bleary eyes. He smiled when he saw his mom's phone in her hand, a popular clicker game's music chirping away on the speakers. "Morning," he greeted and stretched.

Laura's eyes widened before she looked down at her phone. "Uh, dear, your boxers, please," she said in a strange voice.

Dan looked down and noticed his erection was on full display, having slipped through the loose flap on the front of his boxers. "Sorry," he muttered as he tried to tuck himself away.

"Happens," Laura answered as she clicked away on her phone.

"I didn't want to get up and wake you too early. Go ahead and get ready for work. I'll make a bowl of cereal for you."

"Uh, thanks," Dan mumbled as he rose from the air mattress. Ten minutes later, he emerged from the bathroom dressed for work. "Thank you again," he said as he stood at the counter and eyed the pink plastic bowl. His favorite cereal waited for him along with one of the cheap metal spoons.

"Happy to help. I'm going to get a job today. We need it. Even now, I might get one paycheck before the end of the month. That's... well, we'll figure it all out. Oh, and I need to have the post office forward our mail from the... house," she finished, trailing off with a sad look on her face.

"We'll get through this," Dan said as he hugged his mother close from behind. He bent down to kiss his mother's shoulder, as a display of love and affection he felt for her, when he realized he could see straight down her shirt again. Large orbs of glorious flesh greeted his gaze and it made him freeze, mid-kiss.

"Don't slobber on my shoulder," Laura laughed as she gently pushed back against him, pushing him away. She blinked a little and seemed to realize what might have happened. With a strained smile, she turned her body away from him a little and waved to his breakfast. "Eat," she ordered.

"Yes, ma'am," Dan answered by reflex and moved over to the counter again.
