Chapter 10
by Shandy
What's next?
Some questions
The two of you straighten yourselves out, Creda excusing herself to use the bathroom while you take the opportunity to look around the apartment. There's nothing out of the ordinary, just the normal detritus of living. She comes out of the bathroom as you close the drawer of a small table.
"Having a snoop? That's what you do, isn't it? Snoop and bully poor defenseless women," she grins and kisses your chin, then sits down in a chair and crosses her legs, lighting a cigarette. "Well, have at it, gumshoe. You've already had the best part of me, you might as well ask your questions."
You spend the next two hours going over her background and her history with Ives. She provides you with enough details that would convict him of a dozen frauds, while being careful not to say much about her own role in the grifts. More importantly, she also provides a volume of information on Ives jealousy when he heard of her plans to marry Gantvoort and quit the game. You take extensive notes as she speaks, watching for holes in her story or indications that she's lying but you see none.
"Alright, Miss Dexter, that'll be all for now. If I have anymore questions..."
"You know where to find me, Jerry," she smiles with a flirt. "I'll be happy to cooperate with you."
You rise and smile at her, stroking her under the chin before picking up your hat and making for the door. You take a cab back to the office and spend a couple of hours writing up a report, then go to report to the old man.
"Good work. I'm glad you could handle it. Why don't you take the rest of day off? You're looking a little tired. Go home and rest and be in early tomorrow."
You're heading out when Mickey Linehan spots you.
"Hey Jerry, how'd it go with the Dexter frail?" he asks.
"I got everything she had, Mickey," you reply with a smile.
Go home? Get a drink? Something else?
The Maltese Fuck Up
A man finds himself in a new time, and a new reality
This is something of a pastiche or an homage to the hard-boiled crime fiction of Dashiell Hammett and others. It doesn't fit easily in any of the categories, but I put it in Sci-Fi & Fantasy because of the elements of time travel and alternate reality. Many of the characters are borrowed from Hammett's short stories and novels as are some of the locations, and a bit of the dialogue. A few of the threads will be pastiche's of Hammett's short stories, and I hope I may be forgiven for my liberties with them. Finally, although there is erotic content, this is not a heavily erotic story.
