Chapter 143

School Prep
So what's on tap?
"Which class do you have today?" Robin mumbled, squeezing his eyes together carefully. Asprin? No... that wasn't gonna help. Just a little calcium carbonate and it'd be fine... where the hell was it?
"Uh... think I've got slacker math followed by underwater basket weaving and another class on how everything I do is actually your fault and I should denounce you loudly in class to the applause of my peers." Miranda delivered the line smoothly and clearly.
Robin snickered at the first two, and rolled his eyes at the last one.
"Do they stand you in front of the congregation on that?" He found the trapezoidal bottle he was looking for and popped two of the chalky items into his mouth. He chewed slowly, enjoying the flavor, which always reminded him a bit of Valentine's candy, before swallowing. Actually that would make sense... I mean, the first thing you'd want after a night that almost guaranteed you'd have a hangover.
"Yeah, but they replace Amen with Yaaz Queen." Miranda joked in response. "You know I think I can get an A if I get more members into the cult. First thing I have to do is make sure that you understand that everything you know is wrong."
"It's the piece of paper. Only reason you're doing it." Robin shrugged.
"Yeah, I know, just... hate it sometimes. How exactly is any of this teaching me how to play an instrument better?"
"You're the art major, you tell me. I'm just the guy with the English degree and combat experience, I don't KNOW anything anymore." Robin took another drink of water. The roiling feeling in his stomach was starting to evaporate, but that of course led to the natural response of gas expulsion.
"Gross, Dad." Miranda responded to the belch with distaste. "I just don't get it. I feel like I learned more at the library. And my professors... you know that one of them actually told us we had to go picket the administration for our Community Involvement."
"You're kidding." Robin shook his head. "Did you do it?"
"Well, it was a class activity. I bailed as soon as I could and went and played some games at the Library with Sam. Don't think the professor even noticed."
"Geez, a class activity? In what?"
"Small group communication. Official name of the class."
"Ok, I lost track here. I am officially old. Don't get it. Completely lost. I am officially ook ook caveman at this point." Robin waved at Titania as the tall girl entered the kitchen with her customary soft footsteps. Despite her height, she had a way of walking that made people completely ignore her if they hadn't noticed her at the start. Robin had lost track of how many times over the years someone had uttered the customary statement of "Were you there the whole time?" upon noticing the young woman.
"Thanks Dad." Titania smiled at her father, before noticing that her sister had already started on her second cup of coffee. She picked up the small breakfast sandwich, and noted that her dad had even made the sausage well done, just the way she liked it.
"How bout you? Any insanity at high school today?" Robin asked, scrubbing out the frying pan with gusto and a small wire brush.
"Oh, unlike every other day?" Titania responded. "Think they're doing another fundraiser for the band again."
"AGAIN?" Robin sighed. "Ugh, what is it this time? Magazine subscriptions? Candy bars?"
"No, they want us to sell custom pies for a local baker. Supposed to be better... I have the paperwork in my room somewhere. Teach says we have to do it if we want to go to Disneyland."
"And do you..."
"I don't know... the more he talks about it, the less it sounds like fun and more like work."
