Chapter 14 by airwreck airwreck

What happens next?

Sneak downstairs instead.

You brush aside the doubts in your mind and wrap a leg around the rope, but before you descend down, you give a good tug on the blanket rope. The old cast iron radiator strains and creaks. You don't think either the radiator nor the makeshift rope will support you.

Disappointed, albeit with some relief, you climb down from the windowsill. You poke your head out of the window and shake your head at a worried Loretta.

"I think I'm too heavy for this," you whisper to her, holding up the blanket rope. "I'll try to sneak downstairs to the kitchen door."

"Okay. But be careful of the squeaky stairs!" she warns you but she slips to the back of the house to wait for you.

Untying the blanket you throw it back onto the bed. Realizing that the old farm may check up on you in the middle of the night, you stuff some pillows underneath to make it look like you are sound asleep.

Taking off your shoes, you slowly walk towards the top of the stairs. Having adjusted your eyes to the darkness, with what little moonlight shining in, you gaze intently at the stairs while you dip your foot to the first step, as if you expect it to collapse. To your relief the step makes no noise. With a bit more confidence you place your other foot on the next step.

Creak

You hold your breath. The only response is the old farmer's loud snore.

After what seemed like hours, you manage to reach the bottom of the stairs causing a disturbance no louder than a squeak of a mouse.

Having successful past the first obstacle, you now face the more daunting challenge of sneaking past the living room, where Loretta's father is asleep in his favorite chair (with his shotgun next to him!), to the kitchen and out the back door to the barn. However, the front door is closer but you think it may be stuck.

What do you do next?
