Part 4

Sinking

As he looked on hopelessly as his body sank further into the dark depths of the sea, Lysander began to hear from off in the distance a rather peculiar sound. At first, he thought he had begun to hear things, or perhaps it was the sound of some strange beast which roamed in the oceans depths. Either way, it did no matter to him. Not anymore. He knew that his time had come, and there was no point in concerning himself with the world.

But he could still hear the sound, as it grew ever closer to him. It did not sound like the cry of some strange beast, but music, the most beautiful music he had ever heard. As it grew closer still, Lysander could now make out that it was singing, the singing of Women with voices like bells chiming. In tongues he could not discern, but found ever so pleasing to listen to. Then, as the music had come so close it was as if they were singing right in his ears, he saw what had been making such sweet sounds.

Swimming in all around his body from the darkness, came several figures, who’s features he could not quite discern in the darkness. Lysander thought that he must have finally lost grip on reality. He was now quite deep in the ocean, the weight of the sea bearing down upon his limp form, deep enough that no man could dive this deep to rescue him. Perhaps the lack of air now damaged his brain, and the figures he saw and the music he heard were but illusions, real only in his mind.

Suddenly, one of the strange figures made their way closer to his body. Strangely, they seemed able to swim without using their arms. Which furthermore added to Lysanders belief that these were but figments of his imagination. Now closer to him, he could see them a little better, though only from above. The figure was a woman, that much Lysander could tell. She had long locks of Golden blonde hair that floated in the water, and her figure was very feminine. With slender arms and wide hips, that seemed to be not covered in skin, not human skin anyway.

The figure stopped in front of him, before reaching up and gently holding Lysanders head in her small hands. Feeling the warmth on either side of his head. And then, to his surprise, she kissed Lysander. As she kissed him, with her soft lips that soothed his dry and cracked lips. Lysander felt his pain disappear completely, and he could no longer feel the weight of the sea upon him. He opened his eyes, now no longer looking down upon himself and the strange woman. Instead found looking in the face of the woman who kissed him.

She had her eyes closed, so had not noticed he opened his. She was most beautiful, her head the shape of a love heart, with a pale, flawless complexion. She opened her eyes, revealing them to be a deep sapphire blue. She looked into Lysanders eyes. He felt as though she looked right into his soul, at first, he was taken with fear, like she was judging it. But then, she smiled a warm smile, and Lysander felt his fear disappear instantly. And was filled with a warm gooey feeling as one would if their love smiled at them.

Lysander then felt himself be grabbed onto by several more hands, just as soft as hers, which began to drag him gently through the water. The woman who kissed him followed him, still smiling at him, which reassured him, and made him feel safe. As she followed him, he saw that she had the tail of a dolphin, that she waved gently up and down to propel herself through the water. Lysander had overheard the sailors talk about the Mermaids, half-fish women who lured in men with their singing to kill them, or to make love with them he remembered some say. Though they could not be real, but still figments of his imagination, though rather pleasant ones.

Lysander felt himself began to drift off again. Exhaustion overtaking him, and he drifted off once again as he was taken away by the Mermaids.
