I decide to head to the York County Sheriff’s Office, a building that's both imposing and historical. As I pull into the parking lot, I notice the blend of architectural styles that give it its unique character. A series of large, tinted windows runs the length of the building, giving its inhabitants a clear view of their surroundings, while maintaining their privacy.

The most striking feature, however, is the illuminated sign, bearing the words York County Sheriff’s Office, proudly displayed atop the building. The York County Coroner’s Office, I read on their website, is located within, on the lower level. I take note of the two flagpoles on the left side, each one proudly displaying the American and State of Virginia flags.

As I approach the main entrance, I can't help but feel a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. I'm about to enter a world that I've only witnessed from the outside, and now I'm about to dive headfirst into it. I make a mental note of the tall, steel fence that encloses the property, its perimeter secured by CCTV cameras.

I step through the heavy glass doors and enter the lobby, the interior spacious and well-lit. To my right, a security desk with a uniformed officer behind it. I make my way over to him, prepared to state my purpose for being here, hoping that the answers I seek are within these walls.
