Chapter 13

Does she have the program or at least recognize it?
She recognizes it, but there's less time to get ready than you thought.
Her face mulls over it for a second. "Hmph. Those powers mean that you might actually survive this game for a bit." Lucy still gawks at you skeptically. "Your abilities might actually make you pretty strong, but you still look completely hopeless."
"You know...I have to keep you from getting kidnapped but there's no rules saying how." The sudden drop in your tone of voice does grab her attention a little bit while still staring at you curiously. "Kidnapped? As if whoever this person is would be the first one dumb enough to try it. I can take care of myself."
"Yeah...but then...it doesn't cost you much to have more warm bodies to throw at the enemy, right?" Lucy clearly thinks about it for a second before giving a curt nod and observing you expectantly. "Very well. I suppose that you may prove more useful than those bumbling brutes that are supposed to be my guards. Who is this person exactly?"
"Oh...I have no idea."
"...when are they going to try this?"
"I don't know."
"...how many of them? Weapons? Motive?"
"....they're doctors. Of something. Probably magical in some way. Maybe?"
"I was right the first time. You're an idiot."
"But the only one who really cares if you make it out alive." It doesn't seem like it would help to mention exactly why that is.
"Do you have a plan at all?"
"Actually? Yeah. I'm going to group with other summoners as soon I can get a hold of the list. We're working on that. In the meantime, I'm going to go have fun and since I need to keep you in my sight, you may as well come along with me."
With that settled, the walk into the entrainment district is brief. The admission to the arcade is cheap though it irritates you, that she forces you to pay for her expenses as well. Inside, there is only a few people present. A few young couples and some staff, but it's overall pretty empty looking. The entire place is dark inside, and in a deep bluish color that feels strange on the eyes when coming in from how bright it was outside.
A lot of the games are old. Either the controls and game mechanics are awful or they are way too hard for any mere casual gamer. Lucy doesn't hold any kind of half measures in slaughtering you in just about every fighting game and racing game in the arcade. Not that you are without your victories. Air hockey goes well and shooting games are much easier when you just freeze your opponent's gun so it doesn't work.
The day has it's ups and downs, but you still find yourself checking your phone to make sure Julia has responded. Nothing has came of it yet. Lucy also is not trying to act like it but does seem to be ever so slightly more annoyed than normal with the waiting going and nothing happening.
There's no chance for anyone to comment on it, before the lights in the arcade suddenly completely shut out. Leaving only the glow of the active machines as the already low light bulbs seem to either flicker and die down or completely explode.
The entire area is swallowed in the dark, but the faintest shadowy outline of a figure can be seen moving down the corner. It's impossible to say if it's just a bystander or the person you're expecting. There's also the fact that while Lucy does seem to be getting ready for a fight, it doesn't seem like a good move to leave her by yourself.
Chase after the unknown person or keep close to Lucy?
