She gets a new dress anyway

You get up the next morning and your wife is still angry as you can hear her stomping around upstairs. Deciding to stay out of her way, you get breakfast and make a pot of coffee while she showers and gets dressed. When she comes down, you say a quiet good morning in passing, but she only glares back. While she eats her breakfast you head up to the bathrooom to shower. By the time you're dressed and ready to go, she's already left, and you notice that switching up your usual routine has made you slightly late for work.

When you get to work, you briefly apologize to your boss. He comments on the uncompleted tasks from yesterday. You assure him you'll have them finished today, but he still assigns some new work on top. You work hard until lunch time, even though your mind constantly turns towards where you're going to take Kali, and how you might impress her. You resist the urge to look up restaurants and hotels and focus on your job.

You decide to take a quick lunch and get back to work sooner. By halving your break time you figure you can get your tasks finished sooner and research later when your day is done. Without any distractions, you get your all of your work cleared up in time, but because you were late this morning, there's no time left over to look for a nice restaurant for your date, so you just go home.

When you arrive home, your wife isn't back yet. Not unusual, and normally that would mean that you should start making dinner. Instead you use the time to boot up your laptop and look for somewhere to take Kali. It takes longer than you planned but you eventually settle on Emilio's, a small Italian restaurant with good reviews that recently opened. It's been praised for both its food and atmosphere. You call and book a table for two. It's fortunate that your wife comes through the door just as you're hanging up as you're unsure how you would have explained who you were just talking to.

However, as your wife steps into your home, you notice she's carrying a brand new dress that you've never seen before. You worry that she bought a new dress from the budget even though you told her not to.

"Where did you get that?" you ask immediately.

"Don't worry," she tells you coolly. "You didn't pay for it."

You stand with your mouth wide open. If you didn't pay for it then who did?
