Chapter 9 by Manbear Manbear

Does Samantha strip to enter the tower?

She doesn't give in that easily

Samantha slaps the roughhewn stone of the tower in frustration as she contemplates her options. What kind of perverts are in charge of this surreal fantasy anyways? First making her into a walking, talking Barbie doll and then placing this absurd **** field in place to see her naked. She wasn’t sure any of this was even real, although her sensitive fingers could sense every ridge and crack in the stone and the warmth of the sun on her cheek certainly felt real enough.

She still didn’t understand how any of this was possible. The last thing she remembered from the ‘real’ world was the hypnotic voice of the gamemaster as he walked her through the character generation process. Had she been hypnotized? It was a theory to work with at least, if it even mattered. Samantha giggles a little as she remembers her reaction to reading the Stephen Donaldson books years before. She hadn’t cared for the series; unlike her friends (mostly boys of course) she had trouble forgiving the lead character’s **** of Lena and was irritated by the Kafkaesk nature of the White-gold Wielder’s random appearance in the strange new ‘Land’.

Aware once again of the feel of the tower under her fingertips a new thought crosses her mind. If she was Rhiain, with her 20/20 vision, improved strength and dexterity shouldn’t she have Rhiain’s thief skills as well? She tried to recall the grey and white player’s handbook table for thieving skills; she knew the spell charts much better but she is pretty sure even low level thieves start with a pretty good chance to climb rough stonework. She studied the wall looking for the best place to start and realizes that she has no idea where to start. Her Sensei always warned Samantha that she thought too much, she could hear his voice chastising her “Don’t think Samantha, just do.”

Taking a deep breath she clears her mind and lets her fingers run across the wall until her fingers curl with knowledge of their own into gaps in the stonework that she hadn’t even realized were there. Soon she found herself several feet up the wall. Moving with more confidence she made her way up the outside of the tower until she reached the first ring of arrow slits about twenty feet from the ground below. She peered through the slit curiously but the dim view of the circular room showed little more than an empty circular room with a stairway leading upwards. Above her was another 30 feet of climbing before the tower widened out several more feet. It was there that the large glass windows might give her a way in.

Samantha feels a surge of confidence unlike anything she could remember, with this new body she had no doubt that she could make the climb easily. As if to prove her mastery of the wall she climbed ten more feet even more smoothly than the first ten feet. The only thing that concerned her was how she was going to negotiate the overhang above her.

Soon enough she reaches the spot where the tower widens and stopped to assess the situation. The wall angled out at aproximately forty-five degrees for four or five feet. The stonework in this section was smoother too; she couldn't tell if the stonework had been deliberately sanded by the builders of the tower or simply sheltered from the weathering the rest of the tower suffered from sun and water damage but the difference was unmistakable. On the plus side, the ring was decorated with a series of gargoyles if she could reach these carved heads the rest of the climb should be easy.

Does she make the attempt?
