Shattered

Her first hour was a "free period." Sometimes she went to study hall and other times she went to the Gym and practiced shooting baskets and playing ‘one on one’, with anyone that happened to be there. This morning as she came around a hall corner heading for the locker room she saw Kurt standing with his back to her and a large number of students, both boys and girls standing around him. She had thought that she would sneak up and startle him. She made no sound as she came up behind him. She noticed the faces of the students change as she approached. Some looked like they were about to have hysterics and others shocked. When she got within hearing distance, her world fell apart. She realized that Kurt was telling the group in precise detail all about the date they had had last night. Suddenly absolute rage took over. She stepped up behind him and tapped him on the shoulder. As he turned she struck with every ounce of her strength. Being a very large, very powerful girl, and catching him flush on the jaw, Kurt went down like the proverbial poled ox.
The remainder of the school year was a blur. She avoided everyone except her team mates, and then spoke to them only at practice and during games. She played the last few games with a ferocity that frightened their opponents and they won with unbelievably lopsided scores. Somehow she got through commencement, got her diploma and the coveted scholarship to State.
She had spent the entire summer away from home working as a counselor in a girl’s camp. Oh her off duty time she spent hour after hour on the basketball court, and swam countless miles in the lake. Then, suddenly, it was time to start back to school.
