Chapter 9 by gunde gunde

What's next?

Sebastien ventures forth

“I’m heading down there,” Sebastien informed Allura as he handed back the spyglass to her, “stay here, hide the coach.”

Still disturbed by the sight of the demolished village and the murdered villagers, Allura simply nodded her head and watched as he disappeared in amongst the trees that littered the slope leading down to the village.

“William,” Allura addressed the young man still perched on the coach box before raising her left arm and pointing at the spot where the road split up, with the fork of it heading closer to the village, “head down that road and stop when you’re in cover behind those trees.”

“What about you, mistress?” William protested, though he sounded more concerned than anything else.

“I’ll stay here.” Allura’s supernatural appeal showed itself in how William simply nodded his head and proceeded to steer the coach down the road until its leading downwards ensured that the coach was shielded by the trees, ensuring that it was unlikely to be detected by someone inside the village.

Raising the spyglass up to peek through it, Allura used it to scan the village in an attempt to determine if there’s was anyone else down there expect for the five people currently battling it out in the square, where the blonde swordsman was holding his own as he kept the four soldiers at bay, though his numerical disadvantage apparently made it impossible for him to go on the offensive.

Moving quickly as he descended down the wooded slope, Sebastien came out from amongst the trees at a point where there was about fifty feet between him and the low wall consisting of stone piled on each other that offered the village protection from wild animals and at least a modicum of it against human attackers, though it was still low enough that one could scale without too much trouble.

Sebastien took a quick look around to make sure that he couldn’t spot anyone moving about up ahead, and noticed again the cultivated fields that spread themselves out further to his left, beyond the boundaries of the village proper. A quick glance told him that they were not broken up and muddied, implying that there wasn’t a large group of people that had moved across them at any recent point, suggesting that the attackers had either come down the road or via the trees, though the ground which he had covered on his way to the point where he was now standing had relatively untouched as well, making the road the most likely avenue of attack.

Covering the open area between him and the wall in a dash, Sebastien placed his back against the wall and once more looked around him to make sure that there were potential enemies in sight before proceeding to turn round and heave himself up onto the wall, ignoring the smaller stones that slid loose from it to fall onto the ground as he got up on top of it and sat on it, once more scouting the area directly in front of him while simultaneously making sure that the wall wasn’t weak enough that it threatened to slide away from underneath it.

Leaping down onto the ground inside the burnt-down village, Sebastien moved in the direction of the square, sword in hand.

Allura had spotted Sebastien once he’d appeared from amongst the trees, and had not allowed him to slip from her sight since then, following him closely through the spyglass as he ventured closer to the square, at which point she finally looked ahead to note that the lone swordsman had continued to hold of his three attackers, with the fourth soldier now standing back and clutching his arm, though it looked to her untrained as though they were succeeding in slowly tiring him out, having already managed to almost getting him into a position where two or three of them could attack him all at once during the minute or so during which she peered at the fight. While doing so, Allura thought that she noticed something, which brought a thin smile to her full lips.

Worried as to what might happen to her newfound champion, and beginning to lament her inability to try and stop him from rushing forth to join the fight, Allura dropped the smile and located Sebastien again just as he stepped out into the square, appearing from behind the rubble of a burnt-down house just a few yards away from the fourth soldier.
