Chapter 5
by DonQDoflamingo
Is it time to bite the bullet?
Sadly, yes
"It's dark there, but full of diamonds." Mrs. Caldwell is giving her lecture about Willy.
Full of diamonds. The place was full of diamonds, and blood.
My nose started bleeding right after she said that. There it is. Olivia should be handing me a tissue now. Jesus, everything is right on cue. My watch still says 4:46 and the classroom clock says 4:37. Was any of that real?
I felt the warmth of the bullet on my skin. That wasn't fake. I felt that.
"Another nose bleed, Alex? Have you been to the infirmary about these?"
"Uh, yes ma'am. Nothing to worry about."
"Well, now that I've got your attention, what did you think of Willy's actions at the end of the play?" I've already lived through this. Through all of this. And this is really real. It's really happening to me.
At least now I can give a better answer. "His actions were definitely surprising to me, to say the least. I think he found some kind of happiness before the end, but never achieved a peaceful end."
"I disagree with your evaluation of him never achieving peace. I think it was the happiness he never found in the end. Driving away at the end, that was peace for him. Plus, I think his family reflects that particularly well in the Requiem. Was he troubled to find his own happiness, his own peace? And was that dependent on his family and his late brother? Well, I hope your papers shed some insight into some of those burning questions. I've only gotten thesis emails from a few of you so far and given how your Hemingway papers went, I was expecting a little more... Proactiveness. Also, we're starting Gatsby this week, so don't forget to grab your copies on the way out. Anyways, have a fun weekend you guys. See you back here on Tuesday."
Wait a minute. That's not the response she gave last time. Shouldn't she have agreed with my response? Maybe she was going to play devil's advocate the whole time. I haven't even stood up yet, so Olivia is holding my copy of Gatsby in her hand, swaying back and forth, as she was before. Before? Now? Shifting her weight between both legs as she was now. I guess that's right.
Ugh, this time travel stuff is so confusing. Shouldn't Liv still be throwing my book to me at my desk? Did I change things by going back in time. I should've just walked out with Olivia and not messed with anything.
Come on Lex Loser, let's get going. We've got a big weekend ahead of ourselves," she said with a smile. I grabbed my girlfriend's hand as we headed for the door.
"Be careful you two," Mrs. Caldwell called out to us as we were walking out. "It's a full moon on Sunday and all that's when the Tooth Fairy likes to strike."
"Good thing Olivia and I aren't a family then, huh Mrs. Caldwell?" Thank goodness. At least that much stayed the same. I wonder if the Infinite Jest comment is still coming too.
What's happening in the hallway?
