Rumors

As soon as Spencer pushed the door open, he could feel the eyes of Loren, one of the mothers from Carter JHS, sitting with some of her fellow PTA enthusiasts. As he gave them a wave, he pictured the rumors that would be started by those seeing him and Rita together.

"Hiya Spencer." Loren said.

"Hey guys." Spencer replied. "Have you met Rita yet?"

"We've met." Rita interjected.

"We sure have. Had any more thoughts about the next PTA meeting?"

"Uhh, I don't think I can make it."

"That's fine. Maybe next time."

"Yeah. Maybe..." Her dejected tone suggested the opposite.

Loren then looks to those sitting at her table. "Anyway, I better get going."

"So had I." Said Karen, another mother.

The table left as Spencer and Rita found their own. As he sat down, Spencer thought about all the rumors that would come from those mothers seeing him and Rita together. Then again, he knew that such rumors where inevitable. He was a hot topic when it came from gossip, and if it was to be believed, he'd slept with half the town by now.

Rita then said "You okay Spencer?"

"Yeah. J-just thinking."

"About what? Going to a PTA meeting."

"Oh God no. I've had enough politics to last me a lifetime."

Rita laughed for a second. "That's understandable."

"I'm guessing you're too busy with moving in to have the time for the PTA?"

"Yeah, something like that." Rita flashed a smirk.

As Spencer nodded, the waitress arrived to take their order. Once the waitress left, Rita and Spencer continued to exchange small talk as Spencer contemplated the rumors that would spawn from today. Whilst it'd always be somewhat irksome, he'd grown to live with such rumors over the last two years. That's when he realized that his brain has been first to set off any thought of a relationship between himself and Rita.
