The Next Life, A New Name

Reaper

On a rocky beach in a murky tidal pool a squirming mass of tentacles grows rapidly as it reaches out. Its only sense is that of touch, it grasps blindly at his world seeking warmth against the cold wetness that envelopes his wiggling flesh. Focusing he warps his body into that of a human. The huge squirming mass quickly shrinks into a small naked man, a tall lithe and scrawny male with boyish looks, sandy blond hair and crystal blue eyes. He quickly gasps for air and rises out of the pool. The warm air envelopes his face and he looks around the human body weak and fragile in comparison to his true form. The jagged rocks cut his feet, he makes his way to the grassy dunes. Standing shivering in the wind he sees nothing but empty grassy marshland for miles. The cries of gulls and other sea birds echo around him as he marches across the wetlands. After nearly an three hours of travel through muddy ground, rocky outcroppings, and tall grasses he came upon the mouth of a river. He reached out and tasted the water, it was mostly fresh, with barely a hint of salt. In his tired thirst he failed to notice a giant crocodile hunting him, it launched forth from the murky delta and torn into his side. The beast was twice the size of any crocodile he had seen in his old world. His body was crushed in its powerful jaws. His form reverted to the squirming mass of tentacles and enveloped the head of the beast as it dove back into the water. Reaper enveloped the head of the monster croc, he used stinger tentacles to inject lethal poisons into the soft flesh of its mouth. The creature flailed and rolled trying to throw off him but that only accelerated the poison through its body. Dying Reaper began to stretch across the beasts paralyzed body, consuming it, using its biomass to fuel his own regeneration. The souls of the creature was absorbed, Reaper looked at himself with his God's Eye.

He had acquired the ability to transform into the creature. He was surprised his abilities had synergies and unlocked the capacity for him to transform into things he consumed. After focusing on healing and removing the injured status he focused on transforming into the crocodile, not as large as the one he defeated, perhaps because it was limited to his own size he was still much larger than a human, he felt less ****. The form also had several advantages for traversing his current environment. He sat on in the warm afternoon sun on a sandy dune looking over the area and himself, he hunted other creatures in his form. He managed to take down a mammal like creature from ambush in the river. The [Consumptive Adaptation] ability seemed to be limited to only animal organics and those creatures whose souls he could absorb, when he transformed into the mammal, which was herbivorous and he ate plants he did not acquire any abilities, and he could not contemplate how to absorb a soul of a plant.

Reaper resumed his swim as a giant crocodile up the river, keeping a keen eye out along its path. He came upon a few small fishing vessel, the size of a large canoe. He tucked into the nearby cropping of water vegetation and sat silently and still like a log, observing from a distance at the occupants. They were mostly humanoid but not quite human, they had animalistic features. Most of their features resembled those of felines, cat like ears and long short furred tails. His God's Eye told him they were [Nekonians] of a sub tribe that were prevalent fishers. As they slowly made their way down river some of them became more alert. Reapers presence had disturbed the natural wildlife without him noticing. Some of the cat people were armed with long spears others with nets. They outnumbered him 8 to one but he was easily three times their size. Reaper not looking for an engagement sank to the bottom of the river and waited for them to pass. Using his stealth abilities as an assassin he slipped passed them heading upstream.
