17. Return

A few days have passed since Jack arrived. You’ve become more relaxed around him and notice that he has opened up more as well. You’ve shared a few laughs over stories from your lives before the disaster. Along with a few tears for the families and friends you no longer have. Even though you’re happy you and Jack are getting along better, you still worry about Dex’s imminent return.

You’re more than aware of a similar tension hanging in the air that feels almost as intense as the one had been between you and Dex. You’re not blind to the fact that you may be the only woman around for thousands of miles if not the world. You’ve noticed that Jack has become increasingly more comfortable around you and no longer worries about changing shirts in front of you.

You do all you can to avoid looking at his muscular frame but often can’t help stealing a quick peak. You’re more careful about those kinds of things around him and wait until he’s outside chopping wood to change. It’s been almost a week and half since Dex left and you know he’ll be home any day now. This thought brings you both relief and slight disappointment. You’ve been surprised by how much you and Jack have in common and find yourself growing quite fond of his company.

You’re standing looking out the window at the tree line when you sense Jacks presence behind you. He puts a hand on your shoulder and your mind flashes back to your first night with Dex. You feel a jolt of excitement followed by guilt over this feeling. Jack doesn’t say anything but keeps his hand on your shoulder as he stares out the window with you. You close your eyes and enjoy this moment of peace. When your eyes slowly reopen you immediately stand straight. Jack, who had been looking down at you also snaps to attention and follows your gaze. Dex’s distant but familiar figure is heading out of the tree line towards the cabin.
