Does the KISS Stay quiet?
No
Peregrine looked at the clock, noticing that it now said 10:28 PM, meaning that ten minutes had gone by since she’d told Tyr that everything was calm and quiet at the station. Just as she noticed the time, Peregrine became aware of the electric pinging which signalled that the drone monitoring the station was picking something up.
Bringing up a visual feed of the station, Peregrine noticed that it was now a hive of activity, with rent-a-cops rushing out through the main doors and squad cars racing away from it with their sirens blaring.
Shocked at first by what she was seeing, Peregrine couldn’t quite believe that all this was due to what her team of runners was up to. At most, the alarm of a break-in would result in about a dozen squad-cars being dispatched to set up a perimeter until a SWAT-team or two could arrive, but this seemed to be a full mobilization of the entire station. It couldn’t be just Tyr and the others that they were responding to…
“Peregrine to Simon and Tyr,” Peregrine was so taken by what was happening that she actually whispered into her headset, “something big’s going on, don’t know what yet.”
“Roger,” Peregrine heard Simon’s calm voice acknowledge her message, but nothing was heard from Tyr. That wasn’t terribly surprising, as Tyr probably would want to avoid talking into a headset if there were other people around who might find it a bit peculiar and who might want to know who he was talking to and about what.
Considering at first to hack her way into the KISS dispatch system, Peregrine decided against it for now and instead switched on the radio. The odds weren’t high that somebody would notice her unauthorized listening to the dispatch and figure out her position, but the risk still existed.
The radio was turned on to her favourite music station, but Peregrine quickly switched to a local news station to see if it had anything to say about why the cops were coming out in ****.
Peregrine gasped as she heard the special news bulletin, not being able at first to believe what she was hearing, listening in apathy to what it had to say, including the warnings that the riots had already started and were expected to get a hell of a lot worse throughout the night, and apparently both Dudley Square and Edward Kennedy Boulevard were already filled to the brim with looters.
When the looped message began anew, she turned off the radio and spoke with a trembling voice into her headset.
“Guys,” Peregrine was too shook-up to use the proper radio discipline, “the president’s dead.”
