Chapter 16

How the hell does Sarah follow that one up?

With breakfast of course. And maybe a side of Joslynn?

Sarah groaned, she felt deliciously full and satisfied. Dani, Tera, and Ashley were all laying in one tiny bed mostly on top of her. She smiled and stroked someone's hair affectionately. 'It must be the virus,' she thought, 'I'm starting to feel possessive of them, like they're mine.'

She stared up at the simple metal room. It was a metal box except for the seams that had been welded together and the furniture. 'I'll be glad to be able to go back up to the surface,' she thought, aware that she wasn't scared at all of that prospect.

"Mmm," Sarah recognized Dani's voice, "is it morning?"

"No, sis," a thrill shot through her as she said the words. 'I sound like a giddy schoolgirl,' she chided herself. "It's just now evening, 19:00."

"What's that in human?" Dani sighed.

"Seven P.M."

Dani covered her eyes for a minute. "I feel odd. I'm hungry, because food sounds amazing, but I'm also aware that I don't need to eat. And horny, super horny."

"I know," Sarah said. "Infected don't need to eat. We don't understand why or how that could be, but they don't. I've been eating, and it doesn't seem to harm me, and food can taste good still, but… I could just keep having sex instead, I think."

"Mmmm," Dani smiled, "I could go for some more of that."

"I think we've pushed our luck with orgies enough," Ashley said with a stretch, pushing Tera face-first into Sarah. "People are going to start getting suspicious if we're always together in our sleeping quarters in the middle of the day."

Sarah had to agree, as much as she didn't want to.

"So what are we now?" Dani asked. "I barely know any of you, but… I feel so comfortable laying her with you."

"It does feel very natural," Tera agreed.

"Like a family," Ashley added.

That word sent another thrill shooting through Sarah. As much as she wanted to lay there until things turned into an orgy, she knew that it was a bad idea. "Okay, everyone back to your normal routines now, Ashley's right after all. Dani can come with me though," she smiled.

Sarah watched with satisfaction as a number of a small changes disappeared from each of them as they got dressed. She went into her closet and looked through the clothes that Joslynn had provided for her, joined by Dani who had no other clothes to wear. Sarah settled on a white blouse with dark blue skinny jeans, Dani picked a black skirt and white blouse.

"Where to?" Dani asked.

"Dinner?" Sarah offered.

Dani nodded and they set off for the little cafeteria.

"This place is confusing," Dani said as they walked. "All the hallways and doors look exactly the same.

"You get used to it after a while," Sarah shrugged as they arrived.

The door swished open to reveal a room with a dozen round tables with chairs haphazardly strewn between them. The lights were turned down, but just enough to create a little atmosphere. At the only occupied table sat a haggard Joslynn.

Dani went straight for the food, while Sarah glanced at Joslynn again before following her sister.

When the turned to sit Joslynn **** a smile, "Sarah, is this your sister?"

"Yeah, this is Dani. Dani, Joslynn."

"Hi," Dani waved awkwardly. "Sorry, but you look really tired."

Joslynn laughed humorlessly, "Just a little. Sit with me, it's been all work for as long as I can remember."

"Dr. Meng?" Sarah asked gently as she and Dani sat. She knew that it wasn't but better to let Joslynn speak for herself.

She laughed mirthlessly again, "I haven't seen him for several days. The Director is keeping me busy, busy, busy. Things are… Well, things are much worse than the news makes it out to be." Sarah nodded sympathetically, while Joslynn continued. "Did you know that there were seven stations like this? Only three are still responding. Three had outbreaks and the automated security system purged the facility completely."

'Good to know,' Sarah thought to herself.

"The other one we're not sure about. They sent in a team, but they were lost when they got down to the lower levels."

"What about you?"

She looked up with tears, "They couldn't find my fiancée, he was in Ontario. It's… bad. His family has a hunting cabin, maybe he tried to get out of the city, but—" She broke down in soft tears. Sarah held her hands comfortingly. A moment later, Joslynn burst into full sobbing and buried her head in Sarah's shoulder. "What am I going to do if he's infected?"

Just what is Joslynn going to do if he's infected?
