A Demon

There is a demon on the elevator. You nearly laugh. Emily is right. Oddly, it doesn’t bother you in the least.

You make it back to the mailroom. Emily is reclining in her office chair.

“How did it go?”

You mull the question. You feel powerful. You finger the bracelet. It’s feels like it is draining something from you, something important. However, in return it’s giving you power, intoxicating power.

“Great, I slipped in, delivered the package and left.”

“Good. It may be a while before we get another.”

“Emily, do we have an employee rule book? I’m dying to read it.”

She gives you a look like you’re weird. “Over there.”

She points to a dust covered book holding the leg of a table level. You grab it eager to memorize it.

Although slacking off at work feels wrong, you don’t see any rule against it, and right now you’re grateful. You begin reading the four hundred page book.

As you delve into the pages, you have to admit it’s the most fascinating thing you’ve ever read.

“Uh, Jessica, I’m going to lunch. Wanna come?”

“No thanks. I want to finish this.”

You finish the book and realize you’ve committed it to memory. Instinctively, you know there is another rule book for demonic employees. A quick search of the mailroom reveals another book. A book on the shelf you had never seen.

You dive in reading it with enthusiasm.

Emily returns. You look up at the clock and realize she took an hour and fifteen minute lunch. That is clearly a violation of company rules.

You finger the Malexorum, wondering what you should do.
