Chapter 13 by Karbenyte Karbenyte

What's next?

The weekend awaits

After Claire leaves, eat a quick breakfast and get ready for the rest of your day. You slip into the shower just as it warms up, humming a tune to yourself as you bathe. It occurs to you as you're toweling of that today's earworm was Friday Night, Saturday Morning by the Specials, not a song you had thought of or even heard any time recently, but pretty appropriate. You check your phone as you get dressed in your finest attire for a warm day off - a comfortable, old t-shirt and a pair of shorts - and realize that it's already early afternoon. Most weekends when you wake up after a late night out, you feel like you have wasted half the day. This time around, on the other hand, you just feel like you really made the most of the night before. Plus, beautifully haunting dreams and a good-morning blowjob don't really seem like such a waste of a Saturday morning.

You take a quick inventory: wallet, keys, phone..., and then head out the door and down to the street. There is really only one thing you need to accomplish today: you have to head downtown to get your car. You have the entire rest of the day to do whatever you like, or to do nothing at all. This is what Saturdays are for, you think to yourself as you walk the short distance to the bus stop.

It's fairly warm out, as you'd expect from early-summer, so waiting for the bus is not unpleasant. There are a handful of other people waiting at the stop as well. You recognize a few of them from around the neighborhood, but nobody you know by name. There's the old woman who is always watering her flowers, there's the single dad who lives down the road - you surmise he doesn't have his kids this weekend, and there's the woman you sometimes see working the late shift at the gas station a block-and-a-half away. Most people are staring at their phones and trying to pretend that they're the only one there. After a few minutes, the bus arrives. The ride downtown is fairly normal - not too many stops along the way and the bus is less crowded than it would be on a weekday, but the odd smells, of either the bus or the passengers, are a good reminder to you of why you usually drive in to work every day.

You step off the bus and into the sights and sounds of the downtown area on the weekend. There are people all around, browsing shops, on their way to a late lunch at one of the nearby restaurants, or headed to one of the handful of city parks. A few other passengers shuffle off the bus behind you and go on their way. You walk to the corner of the street and have clear line-of-sight to your office. From here, you can see that there are not many cars in the parking lot - not a surprise since the office is closed on weekends - and you can clearly see that your car is right where you left it. Tara and Ben's car is still there too - your friends also haven't come by to claim their vehicle as of yet.

You consider whether you should go and get your car now and just head home. You could probably find something interesting to do around your apartment. Or, you could hang around downtown yourself, maybe do a little shopping, idle some time away in a park, or get a snack at a nearby restaurant or pub - after this morning's hangover you aren't necessarily interested in getting a drink. Alternatively, if you picked up your car now, you could head basically anywhere you like for the rest of the day.

What would you like to do downtown?
