Chapter 24 by FlatCap90210 FlatCap90210

How is breakfast gonna go?

Two starving carnivores and a buffet full of meat. It's gonna be slaughter.

The way to Baxter's seemed to take forever and yet it was over in a flash. When the siblings reached the restaurant, Lily had to squeeze James hand to wake him from his daze.

"Earth to Faye, come in, Faye!" Lily teased, bumping her hips into James lightly.

"Hm? Oh, we're already here?" The dog morph had barely noticed his surroundings, focused on how warm and soft his Lily's hand felt in his own. To think the first hand he'd be holding would be his sister's...

"Geez, you really have your head in the clouds. C'mon, let's go in already!" Impatiently, the retriever morph pulled her brother through the door. When they stepped inside, both stopped in their tracks; the delicious smell of assorted meats hit them like a brick wall, making the dog morphs salivate in anticipation. There were, of course, a myriad other smells - from the other patrons, the kitchen, wafting in through the open windows - but they were all overpowered by bacon, roasts, sausages... It was overwhelming, almost hypnotizing. So it was not surprising that Lily and 'Faye' jumped a little when they were addressed by someone.

"Hi there! Welcome to Baxter's Bar and Buffet, I'm Amy and will be responsible for your dining experience today. Would you like to be seated?" The exuberant, friendly and entirely faked voice belonged to a short, slightly stocky college aged girl in the restaurant's uniform. James blinked. Since when did Baxter's have a hostess?

"Oh yes, please!" Lily replied for the two of them. "We're starving!"

"Then follow me, please!" Amy set off into the restaurant, the two dog morphs following not far behind while trying not to drool as the smell of meat beckoned. "As you might know, Baxter's is an All You Can Eat buffet. I'll be taking care of seating you and serving drinks, the food you'll have to get on your own. Is this table alright?"

"Sure!" Seeing as it was two rows away from the mountains of deliciousness, Lily was only too happy to be seated. "And I think we'll both have just some still water, right, Faye?"

"Hm? Oh! Yeah, I, uh... water is good." James wasn't sure if he would ever get used being called Faye. But as long as it was just in public...

"Alright, I'll be back with your drinks in a second," Amy said, chipper as can be. "Enjoy our buffet!"

The dog morphs exchanged a predatory grin and didn't even bother sitting down, instead dashing over to the buffet and each grabbing the biggest plate available. Their stomachs growling, James and Lily heaped them with anything meaty they could get their hands on. Balancing their precariously high mountains of beef and pork back to their table, they exchanged another, now hungry, smile, and began wolfing down their food.

It took some willpower to hold back, but they both managed to eat at a pace that wasn't totally lacking in manners, only occasionally sending bits of meat and dripping flying. When Amy brought two big glasses of water, Lily thanked her with a court nod, not even slowing down as she tore into another piece of roast beef. James didn't even acknowledge the waitress. The dog morph was in heaven; the taste of meat running through his mouth, it was almost as good as sex, fulfilling a deeply primal need.

After they cleaned their plates, James and Lily got up wordlessly, still swallowing the last mouthful and marched back to the buffet, completely cleaning out the meat trays this time, which sadly resulted in a slightly smaller heap of food on their plates. That, too, was devoured as fast as was humanly able. Although they weren't actually all that human any more, James mused as he chewed on a sausage, his canine teeth shredding the meat with ease.

With their plates finally empty and their belly's full, both dog morphs gulped down half of their water and leaned back, eyelids suddenly heavy as food coma set in.

"That was so good," Lily said with a dopey grin. "The cold cuts... I would literally kill for them."

"Uh-huh..." James felt surprisingly comfortable, especially given the fact that his ears were squished against his head and his tail was bent at a weird angle, pressing into his thigh. But even through this haze of contentedness, James felt as if something was off. His ears twitched slightly under his beret while he tried to figure out what, and it was his ears that solved the conundrum: All throughout the buffet, people were talking in hushed whispers. About James and Lily, particularly their table manners.

How are the two going to deal with this?
