To the Food Truck with Christina

“Hey Christina,” you say, ignoring Annalise’s comments. “I just realised that I’m free for lunch. There’s a good food truck around the corner, how’d you like to try that out?”

“Hey, no fair—” Annalise starts to say, but Christina cuts her off, smiling wide.

“Yeah, that sounds magnificent! Shall we head on over?”

Annalise stews in the corner of the hall while the two of you head out, Christina beaming.

“What’s the food truck we’re going to?” she asks as the two of you leave the building.

“No idea. I was just making it up as I went along. Is there even a food truck around here?”

“Yeah, I’ve seen the Kepler Grill truck parked right around… there it is!”

The two of you get in line for the food, and after a short wait in front of the brightly coloured truck, you order a chicken kebab that is delivered, steaming and heavenly scented, straight into your waiting hands. After Christina gets her food, the two of you sit on a nearby bench, watching busy students and professors rush by.

“This food’s delicious,” you say, after taking a first big bite. “Good pick!” You talk through a mostly full mouth, but she seems to understand what you’re saying.

“It is really good, isn’t it?” she responds, talking quickly. “This is my first time trying it, but every time I’ve gone in the past, the smell has always been so mouth watering. Thanks for giving me the excuse to finally try it!”

“Oh, so that’s all this is. Just an excuse to try new food, right?” Your tone makes it clear that this is all in good fun, but a serious expression crosses her face. She sits there for a moment, thinking to herself, and you wonder if you’ve made a mistake with that snarky comment.

“No really, thanks for doing that just now,” Christina says, biting into her wrap. “It’s been rough, and well… it’s fucking Annalise. That fucking bitch has been trying to steal just about every guy that I’ve tried to get with. And you know what? She’s somehow been all too successful. Like, who even does that?”

“That’s really shitty of her,” you say, putting a comforting arm around her. She leans into you, sighing a little. You hadn’t realised how bad the situation was until now, but the signs were all there, in hindsight.

“Yeah, I don’t even know what the issue is anymore. Is it something she’s saying about me? Or is she really just that much more hot? Or…”

“She’s just forward,” you say. “And guys are stupid and horny and will jump at the first chance they can get to get laid.”

“I guess… I’m sorry, I really shouldn’t be burdening you with all this…”

“No, no, don’t apologise. This is important,” you say, and as the words leave your mouth, you’re suddenly inspired. “Hey, why don’t we try something?”
