Layliel reached Mary Nesbit’s stuffy bedroom again and shrieked in frustration, creating a warm breeze through the room. Tears welled in her big blue eyes as she tried to control her anger.

They never listened to her up there. She was just a big joke.

Layliel heard a soft moan and realized that the wind her scream had brought woke Mary Nesbit up.

“What happened?” Mary Nesbit moaned.

She sat up and looked around the room, her eyes fixing on the book crumpled in the corner.

Layliel scrunched up her nose and stomped over to the book, intent on sending it flying again, but she paused as she got close. Ranna’s tired, exasperated voice spoke in her mind, telling her to back off.

“This is no fair,” Layliel said, pouting. “I’m right here and not allowed to help.”

If she materialized on the living plane fully, she could probably burn the cursed book to ash and ember in as little as five seconds. Of course, heaven would chain her in purgatory for the better part of a millennia for revealing herself to a human and interfering in an unsanctioned manner. Still, a soul might be preserved.

Mary Nesbit stood up and ambled over to the book, standing across from Layliel. She was completely unaware of the angel’s presence.

“You have got to be the strangest book I have ever seen,” Mary said, kneeling down to pick the book up.

“It’s going to start all over again,” Layliel cried. “I can’t just sit and watch!”

As Mary touched the cover of the book, an unnatural shimmer of pink light traveled up her arm and Layliel watched the woman’s aura blush red with lust. Whatever this thing was, it was powerful and it knew what it was doing.

“I can’t just let this happen. They’ll thank me upstairs later,” Layliel shouted.

She lunged forward and for the briefest moment began to materialize, hoping to rip the book out of Mary Nesbit’s hand before disappearing back into the ethereal world. That was the plan at least.

The second Layliel’s delicate arm started to appear in the mortal world, however, she felt her entire body being sucked away, as if into a giant vacuum cleaner. Mary Nesbit and the cursed book disappeared. The room disappeared. The world spun.
