The Parable of the Brother and Sister

“Listen to another parable: There were a brother and sister named Mary and John. Mary and John had loved each other in more ways than just brother and sister.

Therefore I tell you that love is love. The Kingdom of God will accept all forms of love. If you love your sister, you may take her for a bride, and if you love your brother, then he will be your husband.”

Having finished my little religious council in the locker room with the twins, I wandered outside where the Normons were congregating after their baths and was eavesdropping on this little parable that Tabitha was reciting to my Mother and Mary in the front courtyard. Mary looked to be deep in thought at this parable recitation. I should hope so… I did write it with purpose, after all.

“Brother John,” Tabitha said as she noticed my approach. “You are feeling well? The exorcism hasn’t left you haggard?”

“I’m feeling great,” I said.

“That is wonderful to hear. I was worried I would have to perform a few more exorcisms on you today, you had quite the devil in you.”

“What were you guys discussing?” I asked as if I didn't know.

“Mary had a religious question about the sanctity of marriage and her duties as a sister to you. You have renounced your faith, but Mary wishes to bring you back. Alas, the Bible is tough to interpret, many theologians still struggle with the question.”

“What question is that?”

So Mary wanted to know if it was alright, huh? I would have to make it alright.

“Interesting. I don’t believe any of that fairy tale crap, so it doesn’t really affect me.” I said.

Mary and mother both looked startled at this.

“We beg you to forgive him, your holiness,” Mom said.

“He is just lost,” Tabitha said with a warm smile and then turned it into a wicked one. “John doesn’t know what he’s missing. There are so many delights that the kingdom of heaven can offer.”

Tabitha bit her lip and ran her fingers across my chest. “Oh, my-my… One of these days John we will have to sit you down on a bed and teach you how wonderful being a Normon can be… don’t you agree? Mary?”

Mary blushed and quietly nodded.

We got back in the car and drove home, Mary sitting next to me in the backseat and Mom driving. I was staring out the window, my head a daze in reflection with the day’s events.
