Elia wakes you up at dawn with a kick in the shin from her remaining good leg. In spite of the broken bone she refuses to be bed-ridden, and has you carry her downstairs to find a stick so she can walk. You then search through the wreckage of the house for the means to put a brace on her fracture so it can heal in the right shape. As you wrap her leg in the cloth with the rod in between, it’s impossible to tell whether her screams are of pain or frustration at your ineptitude. You’ve never had to do anything remotely like this before.
After you’ve eaten, Elia leads you upstairs and has you search through the wreckage of her rooms for valuables.
“There should be a small chest in there somewhere, toward the corner...” she calls, standing on a crutch in the corridor, where her limited mobility confines her.
You shove some planks out of the way and narrowly avoid falling straight through a hole in the floor, and then spot something glinting in the sunlight, there being no roof to block it. You dig in that direction and more shine emerges.
“There’s a pile of gold here...” you say.
“You mean it broke?”
Another metal object is revealed. “Yes. ‘Found the lock with no box attached to it.”
“Take ten gold pieces for yourself, and bring me father’s pendant. It’s the mark of this farm, a hawk moth.”
“...no sign of it here.”
You continue searching, kicking away splintered wood, tiles, and heaving fallen beams out of the way, yet nothing turns up, except Elia’s anger. She drops the crutch and goes on all fours, crawling into the debris and upturning every fragment herself, yet neither of you finds anything. It’s easily midday by the time she relents, resigned to the loss of a family heirloom apparently passed down for generations.
“I’ve found it!” You were about to set out toward the city, with a new undamaged backpack, when Elia called for you to dispose of the monster’s corpse. You dragged it out of the shed to bury it, and saw the characteristic glint of gold catching the sun in the beast’s hand. There was the moth.
"Oh no..." Elia limps outside and immediately stares at the face of the dead demon.
"What?" you ask.
"It's my brother."
