Chapter 6 by secretfan444 secretfan444

What's next?

“I’ll be training with the Adventurers’ Guild.”

Your mother starts to **** violently mid swallow. Once she has brought herself back together she turns a scathing glare on you.

“Like hell you are. An adventurer? You don’t know the first thing about being an adventurer. I am not going to just let you get yourself get killed trying to play hero out there.”

“Your ma is right. Too dangerrnous,” your father splutters mispronouncing the word ‘dangerous’ but otherwise seeming to sober with the news.

“Well I think it’s great!” your sister declares, and you feel yourself letting go of a breath you hadn’t realized you were holding. At least someone here is on your side.

Ariana! Don’t you go encouraging him like that, it’s dangerous work.”

“Ma, they don’t just send you out into the wilds on day one, there are months of training before anything dangerous happens and he’ll be serving the realm, isn’t that a good thing?” your sister argues.

Adam enters the conversation and, to no great surprise, is not on your side and much blunter with his criticisms.

“Mother’s right. You’re not some mythical hero you are going to get yourself killed. It doesn’t really matter how much work you put in you won’t be the equal to those of noble birth who have trained in such things since childhood as we learned to harvest. Yes, there’s upward mobility there but you have to survive long enough for ‘honor’ to do you any good.”

“Yeah well at least it gets me some space from you,” you retort.

Alex! You shouldn’t talk to your brother like that.”

“Sorry. I just… I need you to trust me to make my own decisions. I am a [sex] now and I’m standing with this decision.”

Your determined gaze locks on your mother’s equally intensive look, and for a moment there is nothing but the two of you communicating a lifetime of struggle, shared and opposed. You know why she’s worried and she knows why it matters to you to do it anyway. The silent conversation is no longer then a few heart beats yet in that time you feel like an understanding has been reached.

“Well then… good luck sweetie,” Mom says finally.

The rest of the meal follows in silence, though no one seems bothered by it. After helping to clean up the family disperses to their own areas for the evening. This would be a good chance to talk to someone in your family before you get bogged down in your new occupation. Of course you could always skip family time and get some rest for tomorrow.
