Chapter 8

What dreams may come?
Dream of Katie
In your dream, you are sat in the passenger seat of an old sedan as it speeds down a long straight highway. Either side of the blacktop a barren dessert stretches out to the horizon. Looking down you see your familiar male body dressed in a hospital gown. Katie O'Brien sits behind the wheel wearing an elegant red cocktail dress and a friendly smile.
"So you're the new me?" she says looking you up and down "Gotta say, having some old dude living in my body? A little bit creepy."
"Hey, it wasn't exactly my first choice either." you say a little defensive "I guess they were all out of NFL quarterbacks and male models."
"Ha ha," she laughs, "You said it, buddy but thems the breaks. All sales are final, no exchanges, no refunds."
You nod in agreement. As strange as it was being Katie was far from the worse thing that could have happened.
"Listen, Katie." you say "I know this a dream and your just a product of my subconscious but I just wanted to say thank you. You've given me a second chance and I want you to know how much it means to me."
"Aw shucks," she giggles taking a hand off the wheel to land a playful punch on your shoulder "Weren't nothing but dying. Way I see it if I've gotta go may as well have some good come out of it."
"But you were so young." you say "It's not fair. You should have had more."
"No it ain't fair." she agrees "but that's not a call any of us get to make. All we can do is make the most of what we get. That's what I want you to do, make the most of it. Live this second life as best you can. Live it for both of us, you hear?"
Tears sting your eyes as you nod, too choked with emotion to speak.
"Hoo boy" Katie yawns "getting kind of tired here. Would you mind taking over a while?"
Suddenly you are sat behind the wheel, gripping it with Katie's dainty hands. You can feel the red dress wrapped around your slim body and glancing down you get a first-hand view of your own cleavage. Looking around you find the car is empty. You are all alone as you drive into a rising dawn.
The next morning...
