Chapter 11 by NeedAMedic NeedAMedic

What does "Lord Haverfield" have to say for "himself"?

Robin Haverfield explains herself

Though a few lingering stares followed them out of the ballroom and out into the corridor beyond, for the most part, Becky and her companion went unmissed. Becky tried to put the quiet murmurs that had run around the room out of her head, while silently hoping that she hadn't just blown their cover.

The two walked for some time, with Becky leading the way, deeper into the labyrinthine mansion, finding fewer and fewer guests in each new hallway. Finally, they found themselves far from where they had started, completely alone in a short length of corridor. Becky stopped abruptly, staring her partner down with a suspicious gaze. She opened her mouth to speak, then paused, adjusting the waistline of her dress for several seconds before giving up in frustration and glaring at her partner again.

"Start talking." Becky said plainly. She wasn't exactly an imposing figure, but she had the **** of indignant righteousness behind her, lending just a bit more weight to her words. She watched the bright green eyes of her mark as they shifted through expressions of worry, consideration, hesitation, then finally defeat.

"Okay." the stranger said. "My name isn't Robert... its Robin. I'm also only technically noble, through some like weird bloodline on my mother's side which no one really cares about and... Lady Dieudonne didn't invite me to the party."

Becky watched the other woman, her gaze unyielding.

"I'm gonna tell you a thing, and I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but I feel like I can trust you. Lady Lemieux told me a little bit about you guys, so if she's not lying, then maybe we should be friends." Robin continued. She seemed to be eager to speak, but was restraining herself as best she could to try and choose the best words lest she feed Becky's suspicion even more.

Robin took a deep breath as she composed her self. Suddenly everything about the girl seemed to change. Her chest puffed out, her mouth spread into a wide, eager smile, and an irresistible gleam shone from her eyes, "My name is Robin Haverfield! I am a hero, and I have traveled the lands to bring justice to the wicked man named Jonathan Highwater!" she reached back, grasping a handle that was hidden somewhere within her dress and producing a rapier seemingly from nowhere. Robin gave it a flourish, the serious look on her face seemed to contain barely restrained excitement. "Lord Highwater has committed horrible crimes against the good people of this land, and I will see him vanquished this night!"

Robin thrust her rapier into the air, striking a pose which she held for several moments while Becky stared at her, dumbfounded. Seconds ticked by, with Robin still stuck in her fairly ridiculous pose before her eyes eventually drifted back to her companion.

"Err... yeah." Robin finally broke the increasingly awkward silence. Her hands faintly shimmered as she slid the rapier back into whatever secret space it had been hidden in. There was another awkward pause while Robin waited for the still-silent Becky to give some sort of response. "Sooo that's me.... and I heard that you guys are also brave and noble heroes here to fight evil! Which got me thinking: maybe we should team up! You can help me fight Lord Highwater, then I can help you deal with... whatever it is you're here to deal with! I was definitely planning on revealing my true identity eventually, by the way, but it definitely didn't seem dramatic enough for it quite yet. I was gonna try and shoot for a super awesome reveal, right at the last moment (like you do, you know?) but well... that didn't really work out I guess. So--now that I think about it-- would you consider maaaybe not telling your other friends about it until later, so that I can really get a chance to set the scene and wait for the perfect moment! When our backs are up again the wall or... or maybe when--"

Robin kept talking, but Becky had long since stopped listening. Her eyes stayed fixed on Robin, sizing the other girl up and trying to figure out whether the girl she was talking to might be useful, or if she was actually just as crazy as she seemed.

Does Becky agree to Robin's proposal of cooperation?
