Chapter 5 by Calix Calix

What happens in a few days?

You Get an Email

Several days following the heated meeting I had about my father's debt, a notification popped up on my phone. It's an email from my dad's lawyer, Mr. Shears, regarding the agreement I had made. For some reason, I was not able to speak directly with them during this time, despite that being my only request. Mr. Shears assured me that he had everything sorted out for my best interests, so all I could really do was hope that he would come through. I quickly found a place to sit down in my apartment and opened the email up.

Sara,

I've been in contact with the company you will be volunteering at and have the full details of the contract. You will spend 100 days at their place of business, residing there permanently. You will be provided with a room as well as food and other necessities. The details about your duties and tasks weren't very well outlined by the associate I spoke to but they have mentioned character building, so perhaps you can take that as a benefit. They are very excited to have you join and are adamant that you start tomorrow. You will not have to bring anything besides the skin on your back as they insist on providing you with any needed amenities including clothing and other personal products. Be ready, I will pick you up in the morning.

John Shears

That was... not what I was hoping for. It doesn't get much more vague than that, if I'm being honest. I'm not happy that pretty much everything I asked about went unanswered and instead the only new piece of information I've been given is that I start tomorrow. I'm especially upset that he didn't even address my specific request of being able to speak with someone from their company.

I calm myself down and open my contacts list to find Mr. Shears. Hopefully I can talk to him about this and delay my start until I've spoken in person with someone from their company. I try to phone Mr. Shear's number but it goes straight to voicemail. I leave a message and call back several more times this evening without any better luck than the first time. It doesn't look like I will able to speak with him until he comes to pick me up tomorrow morning.

Ignoring the details of the email, I start to pack some clothing anyways. I'm not ruling out the possibility that this message was completely made up, just as an attempt to satisfy my questions, however, it was so poorly done that I doubt that it is the case. After filling my suitcase with two week's worth of clothing, I gather my toothbrush and a few other hygienical products.

I don't managed to get a very good quality sleep overnight. I was already pretty stressed out about this whole situation leading up to today and this new email hasn't helped at all. Growing up, I would often get nerves on the night before important events and days. Chloe was usually there to help calm me down and put my mind to ease. Unfortunately, she has not spoken since the meeting and it doesn't seem likely that I will hear from her before I start.
