Chapter 5 by Imperia Imperia

Can you take the knight?

No. Nope. Absolutely not.

If you're entirely honest with yourself, you know there's no way you can take the knight and her entourage. But damn it you have to try! No more being pushed around by these dumb lawmen. You draw your twin daggers and take a stance. You say a little prayer to Togos, but swear you can hear your god snicker at this. Regardless, the knight is readying her blade now, so there's no time to reconsider.

There's no official start to the fight. At some point both your gangs rush forward to meet between you both. You know these types, she'll come to you. So you quietly throw down your caltrops around you. But then you here a sing-song voice speaking a tongue foreign to you. Shit... The knight has a witch or something. Hopefully you don't get engulfed in a ball of fire. You begin reaching for your crossbow, in case it comes down to a ranged fight.

You don't quite reach your crossbow as an armored shoulder slams into you, and you soar to the other end of the room. As you roll to a stop several feet from where you started, you grasp your ribs and cough violently. You desperately blink the tears away as you feel for your now lost daggers. The knight is stood where you were, hair seemingly still settling after that crushing charge. She's smiling brazenly. "Hah! So that's what that skill does. Man, lancer really was the way to go! Thanks for the pointers, Rea!"

A fainter, more cute laugh answers her. "No problem Adela. Anything for the newbie. Now hurry up and finish him. I think you get some gloves or whatever, and they sell alright for the level your at."

Alright.... Ok. No. This was a shit idea. Clearly the knight is too tough of a foe, and she has some experienced helper at her side. Fighting is out the window... But maybe...

You decide to try and make use of your only other skill. You stand on shaking knees, cursing silently as the knight laughs again. No matter. You can disappear from this whole situation. You smirk as you rush forward, shimmering. A quick glance makes clear you are, in fact, invisible. You bolt for the door. You've never even tried leaving, but...

1. You bolt forward, picking up your daggers which quickly turn invisible as well. 2. You slide past the knight, her hair brushing against your arm and face, but you ignore her. As you pass her you can now see the witch, in garish bright red robes with a staff and silly hat. 3. You almost ignore her, but decide to quickly swipe her coin purse. Benefits of being a thief. In the same instant, you spot two guards before the door. Luckily, you have two daggers. 4. Your daggers strike true from their throws. The two guards fall, but you can feel the ability wearing off.

"Whoa no you don't! Paralysis!"

You freeze, despite your best efforts, and collapse to the floor. Maybe Togos just wanted you to suffer. Maybe you were destined for failure. Then... You hear something. Something you've only ever heard when some one completes your quest. A ding. But this time there's this... Warmth. It starts around your stomach, but spreads to every inch of your body. Truthfully, it's somewhat uncomfortable. Maybe less so than being laid on the stone floor, but still.

But... What changed?

Well... That's swell. Would be better if you could move to use these new stats and skills, but hey, this is new. And something to keep in mind. But apparently you can't even get that much.

"Oh, sweet, did you ding Adela?" You hear armored footsteps approaching you, along with the clack of more traditional heels. "Uh... No. I thought that was you, Rea."

You can move your fingers. Then your leg. Before they realize and figure out who just leveled, you throw down a smokescreen. Nice. A cloud of thick grey smoke fills the room at the foot of the stairs, and you desperately scramble for them.

"Ack! Fu- Hey, no you don't!" A fireball lands squarely at the foot of the steps, and you let out a decidedly unmanly yelp as you pull back. You're lifted and shoved roughly into the wall by the knight, Adela. You're spun around to face the two women, and Adela's glaive pointed at your heart convinces you to raise your hands in surrender. The smoke clears and Rea eyes you curiously. "I... Didn't know you could do that... You couldn't do that. Adela, was there a patch recently?"

The knight shook her head, seemingly much more focused on whether or not she should just kill you already. But Rea takes her arm and looks at you again. "Did... Did you...?"

Should you tell her?
