Chapter 9

What will they find?
A Goblin Breeding Cave
They walk through the forest in the direction the retreating goblins had run. It was a beautiful day, warm with a soft breeze. The Autumn leaves aglow in the late afternoon light. The group hardly notices though, each lost in their own thoughts.
Dan was walking beside his sister struggling in his attempts to tap into his magic, he was far from confident that he would be much help if combat broke out. His sister had accessed her magic yet...GAH! He just couldn't put it together. He could feel it within him, just waiting for him to call upon it. He looks through this spell component pouch, hoping something would help him break through. He runs his fingers through a small bag of incredibly fine pink sand. Nothing. He had cast spells probably thousands of times at the game table, how did it work when you wanted to do it for real? His frustration began to cloud his thinking making the whole process even harder.
Kirstie on the other hand was having a whole different internal struggle. She knew exactly how to tap into most of her powers. She just had to reach out to...him. She really didn't want to do that again, it had been humbling and awe inspiring and terrifying all at once. She was so far over her head with all of this she was almost numb at the moment, her feet moving her forward as if on their own. Just an hour ago she had been texting her soccer coach about wanting to play further forward, she would give anything to have such problems again. As she walked her wings tuck tight to her back and her tail lifts just slightly so as not to drag.
Lexori trailed behind the siblings with Yarofaris, they had brought the half elf since they didn't want to leave her alone in this dangerous forest. Lex's thoughts were much different than the others. Despite her fear and confusion over all of this she was loving every minute. How she moved, her voice, her confidence. She began humming a sweet little tune she had never heard before in a smooth honeyed voice. She would occasionally pull out her shiny dagger just to look at her own beautiful reflection. If this was a dream it was a good one, despite the unpleasant aspects.
In the lead was Conor pushing the pace. Now that he had something to focus on he forged through the underbrush without hesitation. A fight would be far preferable to sitting and thinking right now, anything would be. If they couldn't find something to distract him soon he was going to look for the whisky skin he knew Skanky carried. Unconsciously he was tapping into skills the old Conor never possessed, while the others thought he had just picked a general direction and went he was actually following what was a very clear trail to his eyes. His eyes scanned the forest floor and the low branches and leaves for signs of goblin blood left behind by the wounded one, he also picked up the odd footprint or snapped twig that indicated the passage of the goblins.
Before too long Conor holds his hand up for them to stop. They all stand quietly. Just ahead they could make out a small grassy hillock rising from the earth. Voices can be heard, the nasal gravelly voice of goblins. With the creatures so close a few of the group start to have second thoughts about what they were doing. Conor however creeps forward before anyone can voice an objection. Lex motions Yarofaris to stay put and the rest of them follow the half orc.
As they get closer Dan realizes that he can understand the language the goblins are speaking in.
"...I told you, we had anudder one but we attacked!" One says in a whiny voice. "Dey stoled our clothes."
"You greedy, we had nuff!!! An den you come back here!?" The sound of a hard slap can be heard. "Dey probly follow you dum dum!"
Dan's face scrunches up. Shit, there goes the element of surprise. The group could see through the branches and bushes that the mound had a single cave mouth angling down into the earth. The reek of filthy creatures and fetid sex smells wafting from the cave mouth was already turning their stomach even from this distance. They had stopped here, any closer and they would surely be spotted. From within the cave they now hear a very human sounding cry of agony. Conor almost charges forward then and there, but he controls himself for the moment until a plan could be determined.
It looked like two goblins stood at the entrance, though there could be more. The two they could see were one of the nude ones they had been following and another one that was obviously a lookout. These two didn't look like much of a threat but who knows how many more waited inside. The goblins were now likely expecting some sort of response, though perhaps after some time they would drop their guard again. Or perhaps they would send for reinforcements. Dan could speak their language so perhaps he could reason with them, he knew he had a high charisma. From what he knew of goblins though he didn't like his chances.
