A strange floating object.

Hovering about a foot off of my bed was a strange, glossy, inky black orb about the size of a basketball. The area around the orb looked distorted, like the room was being sucked into the strange thing. Even though it looked perfectly still, for some reason I couldn’t help but feel like it was pulsing every so often, like a heartbeat.

“What the fuck?” I exclaimed.

As if sensing my confusion, or perhaps anticipating my confusion, the orb elaborated. Now I understood. “Is there a limit to the number of people that can be affected in this way?”

No. And there is no time limit for the effect, nor a time limit to the gifts I have given you. The orb suddenly vanished, appearing to get silently sucked into itself until nothing was left hovering above my bed.

I was left alone with my thoughts. I could understand why the orb decided to wait until my encounter with Vanessa to explain this to me, I definitely would not have believed it otherwise. I had always considered myself a scientifically-minded person, and even just the existence of properties and powers like this threatened to turn my entire worldview inside out.

I decided not to think too much about it. Apparently the world was my oyster now, and I had to admit I was more than a little excited to see what would happen, especially when I got to school. Did I even need to go to school anymore? I could easily use these powers to make my life as comfortable or glamorous as I wanted to, with or without education. All I needed to do was find an attractive rich woman and make her share her income with me.

My mind was flooding with possibilities, but a sound eventually broke my train of thought. The sound of the shower coming from down the hall.
