A test of skill

Your sparring partner unsheathes his own sword, holding it out in a defensive stance. The two of you move around, trying to circle one another. You watch his moves, looking for an opening. The man has some skill and experience at the very least, as he displays none of the amateur mistakes you were hoping for. You may have to make the first move, but that's ok since your shield gives you an advantage. Stepping forward aggressively, you begin feinting thrusts at him, hoping to **** a move from him. He moves slightly to parry your thrusts, but he seems to know your plan. You start getting more aggressive, using your light shield to cover your weaknesses. You thrust for real now, though you exhibit control enough to not seriously hurt him if your strikes land.

The old soldier is good, but he is having a hard time keeping up under your ****. He lacks both your shield and your stamina, and he is wearing himself thin trying to block your attacks and find a way to counterattack, sweating heavily in the heat. You deflect several potential hits with your round buckler, edging progressively toward him. With killing instinct, you get a gut feeling that you've found the perfect opportunity. You thrust froward, then twirl your sword to the side, throwing his sword away. You swing your buckler out to prevent him from bringing his blade back in, and go in for the kill. You bring your sword-point up to his neck, and he stops. "All right kid, you beat me"

"Well, that was a good performance. Give me a minute to catch my breath and I'll write your recommendation." A few minutes later, you part from the man, letter in hand. Now, you just need to get to Cuba.
