Chapter 5 by Shandy Shandy

Does she have anything further for you?

An old memory

"One more thing, Mr. Watt....Brian," Ms. Naylor says, blushing faintly. "It's not the first time we met, although I don't expect you to remember."

You sit back in your chair, looking at her in surprise and puzzlement. You have no memory of ever meeting this woman before, and while you're well aware that your memory is imperfect, you believe that you'd remember someone who seems to remember you so well.

"I don't understand," you say slowly.

"Mmmm...It was a few years ago. In Vermont. Burlington. You were playing shortstop for the Lake Monsters. You went four for five with a home run and two stolen bases and played your position like you invented it. After the game my girlfriend and I saw you at a pub. You were with some of your teammates and a lot of young women, but my girlfriend dragged me over and we talked for a bit. You signed a baseball for me." She blushes. "I thought you were wonderful."

"Best day I ever had in professional baseball," you say softly. "I didn't have too many of them."

"I've always loved the game. Played softball as a girl. Here, as a matter of fact. Shortstop. I ensured you would be coach of our team. I wanted to..." she caught herself and blushed. "I thought you'd be an asset. A professional....coaching..."

"I couldn't hit pro pitching," you say with a sad smile. "You saw me on a good day."

"You're still better than anything this school has seen," she says firmly, but still with a blush on her neck.

How do you reply?
