Chapter 3
by Nemo of Utopia
Onward!
Paradise Lost: Duty Unto ...
The beam of light hits me, and I feel myself change. All around me the air is rent by screams of agony, but while my change is painful it's nothing compared to the phantom pain from the parts of my legs that no longer have feeling. I don't scream, and five seconds later it's over... At first nothing seems different, though the sounds of wailing car alarms rend the peaceful air, and there is incoherent shouting all around me. I quit out of "Pokemon GO!" and turn on my camera app, then flip it around and I am shocked by what I see...
It's my own face, hideously scarred, glasses held on by a sports band to my almost skeletal nose, lips more scar tissue than flesh, no hair to speak of, just eyebrows drawn on with makeup, and all that: but it's like I'm a uncanny 3D rendered cartoon...
I just stare for a second or two then I'm interrupted by a crash from up ahead and to the left: before my very eyes a real live Charmander comes crashing through the window of a store up ahead, shielding its eyes with its arms, pursued by an angry Froakie!
Soon the Din of battle echoes around the area, and I can think of only one thing to do. I spin my power wheelchair on the spot and head back towards The Greene's central square!
It's not far, though a bolt of fire zips past my head, but when I arrive I am confronted by a scene out of nightmares:
A dozen bodies, of both Pokemon and people, some made strange cartoons like me, lie dead in a massive pile atop the deactivated fountains, and hovering above them, roaring it's rage and pain, is an Aerodactyl.
It turns to me and I am sure I'm about to die, when the Froakie lands on the armrest of my chair and blasts it with a dose of Bubble! The Aerodactyl turns with a look of hate and **** in its eyes. The Charmander swiftly joins the fight, but it's own Ember attack is much less effective...
I cast about for something that I can do and find eight small red, black, and white spheres are magnetically attached to my belt...
The Aerodactyl begins its dive, while both my surprising little allies attack in reply, but calling on my recent experience with "Pokémon GO!" I spin one of the Pokéballs in my hand and launch it at the Aerodactyl! The ball flies in a short arc and strikes the prehistoric flier right between the eyes, whereupon the traditional red energy emerges and it's sucked down...
I wait anxiously as the Pokéball blinks and shakes on the ground: my two allies of a few seconds ago scatter, but I spot one of them sticking around just around the nearest corner...
