Meeting the Governor

Alex walked through the dimly lit narrow corridors of the Governor's castle, towards the room where the Governor held his meetings. "He's waiting for you Alex." The guard outside the room said.

"Thanks." Alex said as he pressed through the large double doors and entered into a large room with a desk in the middle of it. Behind the desk sat an old grizzled pirate, with years of war and sorrow behind his wise eyes.

"Alex, come sit." He said as he placed his pistol on the desk facing Alex. Alex stared at the gun then looked into the Governor's wise eyes, then swallowed.

"Do I have a defense?" Alex asked.

"Whether you live or die is up to you Alex, I really don't like taking orders from British nobles, let alone this Lord Waterton, if you convince me, I may just let you go free."

"Governor, you are aware I'm guessing, of the nature of my mission."

"Generally, yes."

"Good. I received a contract from a Lord Waterton, I know of many pirates who have taken contracts from him before, and I learned that he is a high ranking British noble. I know of course that the reason we are at peace right now, is because the British have found a way to make use of us to do their dirty work."

"The dirty work you speak of, allows us to build up our fleets and numbers in peace, so that when inevitably they break their vow of peace and come for us, we have a fighting chance."

"I now the reasons Governor, it doesn't mean I like it."

"I know child, go on."

"Well as I was saying, I took the contract, which was to kill every man aboard a ship that would appear at a certain time in a certain place."

"Ok, where's the catch?"

"Very smart Governor. I had acquired the help of the Brothers recently in an attempt to find my brother."

"Your brother? The one who came into port with you?"

"Yes? How did you?"

"I have my sources on the docks Alex, continue."

"The Brothers gave me very similar coordinates to the contract that we took. They were surprisingly easy to deal with."

"You know the Brothers are not to be trusted, they have their own purposes, and their affiliation with the assassins is troubling. I do not know if I approve of this Alex."

"I was **** Governor, I needed answers. I knew that John would follow in my footsteps. He used to admire everything I did. Sure enough the contract I took would result in the **** of my brother."

"A set up?"

"I had my suspicions, but I needed to be sure. We set sail for the coordinates and sure enough the Navy ship was there, we slaughtered the crew, and one of my men saw someone who looked like my brother run blow deck. There he was, my brother was in front of me again."

"Why would Lord Waterton want your brother dead?"

"He told me how he was going to marry Lord Waterton's daughter Sophie upon his return back to London, maybe that's why?"

"Sophie? She died two years ago." The Governor said confused.

"What? Lord Waterton's daughter? That can't be?"

"Lord Waterton is a high standing officer of one of the oldest branches of the British knighthood."

"Ok?"

"That knighthood has been dedicated to ending the assassins of old."

"Ok? What are you saying Governor?"

"Why would a hunter of assassins want your brother dead?"

"I don't know? Maybe he's going senile!"

"Don't raise your voice with me boy!" The Governor roared.

"Sorry Governor, I got caught up."

"I know son, but we must take into account all possibilities."

"Like what? That my brother is an assassin?"

"Perhaps. Where is he?"

"I sent him to wait on Mary until I get there."

"Mary? The renegade assassin Mary?" The Governor asked incredulously.

"You've got to be shitting me! He played me!" Alex shouted

"Go! I have a feeling their already gone though." The governor said as Alex ran out the door towards the pub. When he got there it was chaos, people were laying on the ground knocked out or dead, mugs were broken and beer stank on the floor mixed with the vomit of the sailors.

"Hey Keep! Mary, where is she?"

"Alex! She and that boy you came in with had a huge fight in the middle of my bar! I'll be putting it on your tab."

"Yeah, yeah! Where are they?!"

"They went that way, towards the docks." He pointed towards the water.

"They better not have." Alex muttered to himself as he ran to the edge of the docks to see his frigate floating out into the sea. "I should have just killed him." He muttered as he went to go searching for is crew and give chase.
